I don't get it Marine ? ?
This is not a Happy Holidays thread, and only ONE of the names listed above are celebrated today.
... u mean the thread with 'Christ' in all caps, right?
.. they are all celebrated on this day.. just not in America and/or by 'our' religion..
Today, whether you are Christian or not, is about Christ.
Christmas as a holiday is about giving and receiving gifts .. the celebration on December 25, historically, is about the Winter Solstice ---> Pagan ----> not Christian and therefore blasphemous
How many of America's Christians told their kids that Santa Claus brought them presents last night? Hmmm? Seems like a Pagan Tradition wrapped in Religious Gift Wrap to me.
We know Jesus wasn't born on Dec. 25, but its convenient and makes sense to celebrate it today; a day of transition, renewal, transformation, etc. What we do today is unlike any other person's birthday that we 'celebrate'.. and i feel confident saying that Jesus would feel better if we used 'gift-giving' as celebration of family/friends (like we do already) rather than 'gift-give' for His birthday (like how we rationalize it).
If you are Christian, today is about celebrating the birth of Christ, no other religious figures.
JUST SAYING: What the names on that list all have in common is that they impacted/influenced their followers in the same way that Jesus has done for Christianity. This isn't a "Top 10 Religious Icons" list, Jesus is just the most recent addition, and they're ALL tied to this day as the day of 'honoring' or 'celebrating' their birth. I don't think being Christian trumps being able to acknowledge the existence of other religions. So if you choose to link December 25 as Jesus' Birthday, you can; just don't say December 25 is about NO other religious figures because you obviously don't know that for sure.
