Ireland

I've decided that once a year I will take 2 weeks and travel abroad.

2011 I'll be going to Ireland. I know it's a bunch of drunks and poor people bitching, but I've got a friend whose got a friend whose got a house on an island off the main island and offered it up for free. The house is on the Northwest part of the main island, outside Donegal.

So, anyone ever been there? Any advice or suggestions?

i too plan to travel a broad. The first broad I have planned is amazon eve. I'm not foolish enough to think I can summit this mountain in one day, I'll probably camp half way up then summit the peak on the second day. Traveling broads should be fun!

I've always wondered that. If shit ain't broke, don't fix it.

It's probably some marketing BS so when a kid sees it, they go "Mommy, mommy, mommy, CAN I GET SOME LUCKY CHARMS?!?! They have Blue Diamonds now!!!!!!!1i!iii!!"

Stupid kids, they ruin everything for the rest of us.

Bobby we were thinking about going also. Aer Lingus has some killer deals right now, like 6 nights, air and car for $800. All my family members say Dublin is a bust after you see the like 6 tourist spots.

Planning on flying into Dublin, then getting the fuck out and spending about 8 days out in the country side. I'd like to backpack it out of Dublin, but a buddy wants to use a different method of transportation... I prefer talking to the locals and getting to know them and their culture. Crazy? A little bit.

In Dublin, Temple Bar street has some decent bars with banging chicks but it's the "American" bars and you DO NOT want to be around if you're a Yankee after closing as the hooligans like to start shit with Americans. Watch for the junkies on the East side of Dublin as well, it goes from a decent area to tenements in an instant and shit gets nasty.

Guinness Tour is mediocre at best, the apparently changed a lot of things on the tour due to their crumbling economy and it's not as cool anymore.

Shannon and Killarney are great if you want to relax in a town that's reminiscent of 1900s Ireland, still a lot of beautiful scenery but like visiting a town in backwater Louisiana, just a little slower than the rest of the world.

Last but not least, if you do visit Dublin, take a bus to a town on the outside of the city called Howth. AMAZING views of the green hills and the ocean. Only about a 30 min bus ride and well worth the 3 Euro ticket.

Feel free to call me with any other questions, I spent 3 weeks there a few years back, one of my favorite parts of the world.

the day my son was born i had major spats from making french fries as my main meal for the few days before

i rented a car and that was fun but i never saw any street signs so i had to remember

"F" Ireland, you should go to Amsterdam, traveling broad is really easy there.

I spent 3 weeks in Ireland a few years ago- Dublin is pretty lame, except for the Guinness brewery and the Jameson Distillery. (It's the old one; they don't even use that one anymore... but the whiskey tasting. Do it.)

The fun in Ireland is meeting people; every Irish native I met was extremely friendly and personable, had no problem talking to strangers, and loved politics. The social lube of enormous amounts of alcohol helps.

Depending on where you stay, look for some cool castle tours- I found that I enjoyed more of the smaller ones rather than the big ones. Mine were mostly in the middle of Ireland, that's where I stayed the first week. A place called Dún. It was easier for us that way, as we flew into Shannon Airport instead of Dublin.

^ that was one of the Shamrock Cottages I stayed in. Pretty reasonable rates if you don't want to stay in a hotel, and don't mind cooking for yourself. May possibly be incredibly hard to find yourself. I had to stop and ask someone walking on the road where to go. And, it's cheaper to drink in pubs than to buy booze at a store to bring home. Speaking of which- the damn grocery stores close early. Think, 5PM or 6PM if you're lucky. I went hungry my first night in Ireland! :

Also, visit the west coast. It's colorful, and may stink of fish... but fun. There's stuff to buy, like wool things and Galway crystal.

Where I discovered that I have a fear of heights, just off the west coast:
Skellig Islands. (When I went, the tours were cash-only.)

^ Pretty sure I only took that one picture while I was there because I was clutching my friends like they were some enormous pillars of strength.

I couldn't be that close and not hop over and see the TT race.

Life has no instruction manual. Parts and labor can be impossible to find. Many go down the road with parts that are in need of service. A breakdown is eventual.
