where to buy steel?

I need a piece of 1.25" X .120 mild steel. It's for bike frame. I'm having a hard time finding any place that deals with the public and I don't really need a truck load. I'm way the hell out west in Yorkville so Chicago is probably too far to go. I know I can order online but shipping is more than cost.

My wife thinks we're a bunch of Top Gun wannabes with our call signs, so for future reference, I'm Roger

McMaster only has 4140. ($67 for 6' stick + shipping)

Should be able to get 10' mild steel for about $40

Thanks for looking, though. I'm welding with a 110V MIG welder so low carbon mild steel is easier for me. And cheaper.

McMaster has it

8962K23 for 36"

8962K73 for 6'

EDIT: although thats galvanized. I have no idea what that does for welding. They do have 1" wide or 1-1/2" wide, unplated

Eric

round. I'm gonna have to find someone with a piece or pieces. It seems nobody stocks it. They can order it and have it tomorrow which means they are getting it from the places that tell me they don't sell to the public.

Just look for a job shop (small machine shop), they should have what you want or can order it along with their next steel order for a lot less that what McMaster-Carr will sell it for.

If your in yorkville, your not "WAY" out west from west chicago!

Drive a bit save some cash, ship it and pay more... simple as that.

chicago tube and iron

to be honest, 4140 and mild steel will weld pretty much the same working with a 110v mig (gasless?)
heck you could go to a home depot and get black steel pipe and use that too if all you want is mild steel
