New Illinois Speed Laws-FYI

New speed laws went into effect on Jan 1, 2011 in Illinois and stricter use of court supervision in such cases. I read the article at the Thetimesweekly.com however due to my low post number it wont let me post the URL. Over 30 mph is now a class B misdemeanor and court supervision is no longer allowed over 40 mph. It's easy to find on the site.

They have also tightened up the use of court supervision given in different districts with a centralized monitoring system to stop the chronic use of it.

Big changes.

2011 Brings New Illinois Laws on Campaign Donations, Monkeys and Sexting

By Joanie Lum, FOX Chicago News

Chicago - 2011 brings new laws to Illinoisans, and some might be a surprise. Laws on everything from sexting, driving and monkeys take effect Jan. 1.

For starters, it will now be against the law to make a false 911 call. This law came about after a sheriff's deputy in Kankakee crashed his squad car responding to a fake call for help.

Red-light cameras won't go away, but there will be new regulations. Cities will have to post the locations of red-light cameras on the internet, and violations must be reviewed by a law enforcement officer.

Parks and park buildings will be off limits to sexual predators, and they will have to register as sex offenders for life.

There will also be new rules for excessive speeders. Those caught going 40 mph over the speed limit can no longer receive court supervision as punishment.

Kids who get caught sending indecent photos of other minors could get court supervision or community service. Sexting is an increasing problem with tragic consequences.

You can't own a monkey anymore, unless you get one before the law takes affect. There is an exemption for people with disabilities.

Another law means factory-built homes on private land will now be taxed as real property. Up until now those homes have been taxed at a much lower rate. Some owners will see their tax bill jump from a few hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars. The new law does not affect units in mobile home parks.

It will be against the law to have public money finance a portrait of Governor Rod Blagojevich or any governor who was removed from office by impeachment and conviction.

A big change is there will be limits on campaign contributions. Individuals can give $5,000, corporations and unions can donate $10,000 to candidates.

Other requirements on Jan. 1 include sports agents and hair braiders having to register with the state, and if you are a driving instructor, you must be sober when teaching someone how to drive. That includes family members.
Dammit, I wanted a monkey!!

Nothing really new. This is to cure the problem they had with Judges giving people supervision for the super speeders. As they say you have to pay to play. Won't change the way I ride on the street.

If you're caught speeding 30 miles an hour over the limit, you can be fined $1500 dollars and spend six months behind bars.

If you're going 40 over, you could pay $2500 dollars and spend a year in prison with no chance of court supervision.

The article in the times weekly goes into a lot of detail on the law. Judges and prosecutors in other counties can now look at other districts and see if you were given supervision before as you are only supposed to be allowed 2 supervisions in a one year period or it goes on your permanent record. Previously they couldn't.

Also 63% of the people exceeding 100mph in the Chicagoland area were given supervision which is now over according to Jesse White.

You have to pick your spots more carefully. The $1500.00 fine and possible jail time for 30-39mph over seems a bit steep. Particularly the possible jail time.

Seems a bit shitty that at 3AM in a neighborhood on a 5 degree night you can be popped for that much trying to book home even though you really put no one else in danger doing 55 in a 25 -- it's not like kids are out playing at that hour or anyone else is around, but you're uber-fucked none the less if they write you up for it.

I second that. The big difference between a Class B misdemeanor and a Class A misdemeanor (which is over 40mph) is up to $1000.00 more in fines and a possible 6 more months in jail. So for a measly $1000.00 and 6 months more of unpaid vacation you get 95-195 mph. Try to beat that at Wal-Mart.

I believe the law should be more strict as to not allow the more extreme cases to get off with court supervision. But, one would hope that police could use common sense and take the spirit of the law into consideration when writing tickets.

Pffft, yeah right.

I bet I can with Rick's computer! Funny thing, is that on some of the side streets I can easily break the speed limit on my bicycle by quite a bit. In a car I go to jail, but on my bike I guess that's fine.
