RIP: Empire Carpet man

Anyone who grew up in the Chicago area knows him. I remember seeing him on TV as a little kid. In fact, I remember looking up the Tribune for the date of my birth (1975) and he was in an advertisement even back then!

Because of him and the ads, EVERYONE knows the phone number!

'Empire Carpet Man' dies at 89

Quote:
Lynn Hauldren, 89, the advertising copywriter who became the inspiration for the Empire Carpet Man in the 1970s and helped launch the company's signature jingle into national recognition, died Tuesday, according to an Empire spokesperson.

Mr. Hauldren rose to became a decades-long advertising icon, as the person who wrote the catchy jingle that accompanies the company's famous phone number, and often delivered it with style: “Five-eight-eight, two-three-hundred ... Empire.”

Wow, I was just wondering if he was still alive the other day...watching that digitized version of him on the commercials now.

I always think of the book Neuromancer by Willian Gibson when I see those.

My girlfriend did. They quoted her some outrageous price at first and she was able to jew them down to less than half of the original quote. It ended up being a good deal in the end.

how about "Hudson 3-2700" ?

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"
