OMFG - I Just Saw 5 People Get Hit

Standing outside of Cedar Hotel on Rush - We hear tires screech - We all turn and see a Chicago Dept Of Water Truck lose control and jump onto the sidewalk and take out (5) people - (2) of which got pinned under the truck, against the wall of the Puma Store

About 15 people picked the rear of the Truck up and pushed it off the couple - One of the others was a Mother carrying a baby in one of those back pack things

I am so freaked out that I am shaking - It happened about 5 mins ago and I was about 50 feet from it

I have never seen or witnessed anything like that before in my life - People were screaming and running everywhere trying to help - My buddy was pushing the truck off the couple - Wow - I will look for a link to the story - Crazy

Eight people were injured when a vehicle hit them on the Near North Side this afternoon, officials said.

A vehicle struck the people -- at least one reportedly a child -- in a crash near Cedar and Rush streets about 12:20 p.m., said Chicago Police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

A fire official said eight people were taken to various hospitals: four in critical-to-serious condition, two in serious-to-fair condition and two in fair-to-good condition.

A witness said it appeared a city truck hit several people and perhaps one other vehicle, pinning some beneath one of the vehicles and also injuring the truck driver.

The Chicago Fire Department called an Emergency Medical Services Plan 1, which sends at least five ambulances to a scene, for the accident.

The witness said it appeared there was a photo shoot going on near the intersection, and the truck hit some people involved in the photo shoot. Pedestrians tried to lift one of the vehicles off of more than one person who was pinned under a vehicle.

The driver of the truck also appeared to have been taken to a hospital by Fire Department ambulance, the witness said.

The Photo Shoot was a Guy and a Chick in Wedding Clothes - Tux & White Dress - I saw him on the ground and (1) of the Photogs got hit square on

I am still shaking - Hearing that woman scream and seeing (2) bodies pinned against the wall under a City Pick Up Truck was horrifying - Why I am posting I do not know but I could not stand there as I felt so helpless - I could not get right in the action as I wanted to throw up when I saw the people on the ground

We had just seen the couple posing for the Wedding Modeling Shots (5) mins prior in the park across from Tavern and we were joking with the guy telling him to "run, its not too late, you have 48 hours to get it annulled" - 5 mins later he was on the ground knocked out

Not confirmed but that was the text I got and he has no reason to lie

crazy. other than stopping massive bleeding and keeping them breathing theres really nothing you can do for them until the ambulance arrives. now would be a good time to get your CPR cert if you dont have it already.

i remember being at the college across the street while someone drowned in the pond. i was walking my dog and heard people screaming HELP and that "they are drowning" and i saw someone swimming back to the shore/grass and thought it was that person they were talking about. turns out the other person was already under water and had been sucked in by the fountain. was under for like 10 minutes already. at that point it was a body retrieval. soon a helicopter landed and divers went into the water. they found the body like an hour later.

Dude, that's so sad. In so many ways.

On a somewhat different note it always amazes me how little people pay attention DT. People are like sheep at street crossings, never looking up to see if it is safe. Or texting while walking and almost stepping out in traffic. Crazy.

More than a few worlds were turned upside down today at that scene.

Sorry you had to witness it Bug.

8 Injured In Gold Coast Crash
Updated: Saturday, 21 May 2011, 8:51 PM CDT
Published : Saturday, 21 May 2011, 3:53 PM CDT

Sun-Times Media Wire

Chicago - A Department of Streets & Sanitation driver lost control of city truck and crashed into several pedestrians -- including a toddler and a group of models in a wedding photo -- Saturday afternoon in the Gold Coast neighborhood.

The Streets & Sanitation Ford F-150 pickup truck was northbound on State Street when the driver lost control about 12:20 p.m. and struck four adults and a child at 6 E. Cedar St., police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.

Isaiah Watkins, who works at Ashkenaz Deli across the street from the crash, said the truck driver was “very disoriented” after the crash and looked like he had been drinking. He said police took what appeared to be a whiskey bottle from the white pickup truck.

Investigators were interviewing the driver Saturday evening, but the driver had not yet been charged or cited, Mirabelli said. Police would not say if alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash until their investigation was completed.

The truck collided with a photographer shooting several pedestrians modeling a wedding and nearby bystanders on the southeast corner of the intersection, Mirabelli said.

Watkins said he heard the pickup truck sideswipe another vehicle and saw people hitting the ground.

“I’m sitting here working and the next thing we see is the truck directly in front of the door,” Watkins said. People were scattering, flying and dispersing. It was something I never saw before.

“I saw at least three or four people lying on the ground, blood on the ground. People were crying. It was a horrible sight.”

A child, about 2 years old, was taken to Children’s Memorial Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mirabelli said. The toddler’s caretaker, a woman in her 20s, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in “very critical” condition, police said.

The photographer and “bride and groom” were also hospitalized, police said.

“The ‘bride and groom’ did not sustain life-threatening injuries,” Mirabelli said.

A total of eight people -- including the motorist and a -- were taken to local hospitals, police and fire officials said. Two people remained in “very critical” condition Saturday afternoon.

An EMS Plan 1, which automatically sends at least five ambulances to the scene, was secured at 12:52 p.m., Fire Media Affairs spokesman Richard Rosado said.

The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.

Probably not. The guy works for the city so he is likely some politician's cousin and his DUI blood sample will get "lost".

Streets and Sanitation worker charged with DUI in crash

City worker charged in crash
7:56 a.m. CDT, May 23, 2011

A city worker has been charged with driving under the influence and other violations after allegedly hitting eight people, including a toddler, Saturday on the Near North Side, police said.

Dwight Washington, 61, of the 1800 block of North Linder Avenue, was charged Sunday with four counts of aggravated driving under the influence and causing bodily harm and two counts of misdemeanor DUI. He was also ticketed with transporting and carrying alcohol, failure to reduce speed and negligent driving, police said.

Washington, a Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation worker since June 2006, was driving a city pickup truck Saturday when the vehicle went out of control near Cedar and Rush streets and struck a group of pedestrians, police said.

Some of the injured were participating in a photo shoot depicting a wedding party and were posing on a corner when they were struck by the Ford F150 pickup truck, police said.

A fire official said eight people were taken to various hospitals; four in serious-to-critical condition, two in fair-to-serious condition and two in fair-to-good condition.

Police, however, said seven people were injured, including a 1-year-old girl who was listed in good condition.

Washington is scheduled to appear in bond court later today.
