The Mideast
Saudi Facebook Campaign Calls for Men to Beat Women Drivers

Published May 25, 2011
Manal al-Sharif is shown driving in Saudi Arabia.
A campaign on Facebook is calling for Saudi men to beat women who plan to drive cars in a protest next month, AFP reports.

"The Iqal Campaign: June 17 for preventing women from driving" advocates a cord be used to beat women who plan to drive. Women are not allowed to drive in Saudi Arabia.

Some 6,000 people have "liked" the campaign on Facebook.

It was created in response to female activist Manal al-Sharif, who created a page calling for Saudi women to defy the driving ban on June 17.

Her page was taken down following her arrest for driving May 22 in the Saudi city of Khobar.

A petition has been launched to release al-Sharif from jail, garnering more than 300 signatures, according to AFP.

Saudi Arabia is the last country in the world to ban women from driving.

ROZ - "Rule of thumb?"

CONNOR - "Yeah?"

ROZ - "Do you know where that term comes from? In the early 1900's it was legal for men to beat their wives as long as they used a stick no wider than their thumb."

Connor holds up his thumb and stares at it.

CONNOR - "Can't do much damage with that. Perhaps, it shoulda been the rule of wrist. Ha!"

Saudi has an old backwards ass culture; nothing to do with the religion.

There are plenty of women drivers in the Middle East and rest of Muslim countries.

With our short attention spans, how many people are even going to remember this story in two weeks? Heck, why is this on line and I haven't heard anything about it on broadcast news?

Read about Saudi Arabia in the pre-Islamic world. They used to bury their new born girls. Similarly to many Indians in rural villages who still do it today. Things like this have much to do with culture and not the religion.

Instead of putting your efforts into wise ass comments, perhaps you should do some research.

Saudi is the only country in the world that bans female drivers. There are about 50 other countries in the world with a majority Muslim population -- all of them allow women to drive.

Saudi has an ancient culture and society, which many times trump the religion when it comes to such laws.

The irony is that there are more female college graduates in Saudi than male. So naturally, as a young professional, women have a need to drive.

Its a ridiculous law that makes no sense from a religious or a practical point of view.
