Question for the dorks II

Need some help from the developers on the board (Arch, I'm looking at you ).

Would like to know how to kick off a batch script using a trigger file sent to a server.

Here's the scenario:
1. Source system (SAP) spools out files. After the last file, it sends a trigger file. These files are ftp'd to an AIX server.
2. Windows batch file (on separate Windows server) is scheduled to run at certain times of day. Part of what this file does is pick up files from the ftp server, then loads those files into a db. It does not use the trigger file.

The problem with this scenario is that sometimes the files are not delivered at the correct time so when the process runs, it loads files that were previously sent.

Ideal scenario:
1. Source system spools out files. Last file is trigger file.
2. Batch process sees trigger file and kicks off process.

Where it is ftp'd I don't care. But I'm guessing is that it is better if the files are sent directly to the Windows server rather than the AIX box.

Any help is appreciated.

how about you just have your batch file delete or move the files upon completion so when it reruns it can't rerun old data even if new info isn't there yet. Seems easier.

my goal here is to have the batch file run when the files are available rather than run on a schedule. if it deletes the old files, it will load nothing which will still result in having the same data that was there previously.

when the files are sent on time, it overwrites the files. so no need to delete.

the problem is not that its loading the same data, the problem is that the source system sends files late at peak times of the month. so we want to coordinate the job to run when it gets there not when we expect it to get there. nawmean?

Have the batch program delete the file when complete. Put batch program processes in an if statement. Check for a file first. If no file exit batch program. Increase frequency that batch program runs.

Not sure how you can use the trigger file to start the process.

there is a way to do it. that is the purpose of a trigger file. process looks for that file, then kicks off once it sees it.

If the process looks for it, then it is the same thing as the batch program I mention. Just have the batch program look for the trigger file. If it doesn't find it, exit. If it finds it, run, then delete trigger file.

that one file you mention would be the batch file. so how would that look in the batch process?

the trigger file gets loaded into a directory along with the data files. the batch process looks for the trigger file in the directory. If it doesn't find it, exit. If it finds it, run processing the data files, then delete the files. the trigger just says it's done transferring files to the directory. So if you only want your batch process to run after all files have been received, look for the trigger file. Otherwise, you just need to check the directory for data.

so how would you write that in a batch file? give me the syntax.

Couple ways to skin this... I've usually fallen back to the methodology of:

First, send a dumb trigger file LAST in the file move process. Otherwise, you might start processing data files while they are still being transferred into place... ICK.

Fire off processing script at normal time...
check for trigger file.

IF NOT present, Sleep for X minutes in a loop and check again... you can put in a counter here that after 100 (or whatever number you pick) checks, error out because it should have been there by now - something is really wrong. Exit w/ warning/notification.

Eventually it will be present if things go right... then.

IF present, Do the work and delete the trigger file only, exit

This is so simple to do in bourne shell (using cygwin).. Syntax on a dos batch file may be ugly but I think the capabilities are there..

A while loop would be something like a :TAG do your checks, process if present (delete tag) and exit else goto :TAG to keep looping

check for existence of file with IF EXISTS tagfile.ttt CALL processing_batch
(or GOTO :TAG - where you continue processing commands later in the file)

If you only fire this off one time, you can wait to delete the tag/trigger file when processing is complete.

If you write this to run every X minutes to see if there's something to do (like a cron job to run every 5 minutes continuously), then you check for the presence of the tag/trigger first, if present, DELETE IT IMMEDIATELY (so the next process does not start the same job you are working on) and continue with processing.

I have stuff that works both ways... some things are once a day processing and I fire it off once, and wait in a loop looking for the tag file, then continue... if X amount of time goes by (5 hours), I email out warnings.

I also have stuff that needs to check to see if there is something to do every 5 minutes... if there is, process... if there isn't, exit. During these, something may take longer than 5 minutes to process so I also write out a BUSY tag file right after finding the tag file, and the script checks for BUSY as the first line, and if present, exists immediately so it does not clobber something already in progress. It also uses the tag file to denote work to be done... but also a busy file to say something's already working.. If BUSY exit. If no BUSY, check for DOWORK tag.. if present write out a BUSY tag file and delete DOWORK tag file and process things... when done, delete BUSY tag file.

Whatever works for your environment will be the 'right' way to do it...

Everyone Exaggerates

We're being taken for a ride... agaaaaaaain.....
