Wolf River, WI.

Great time.

You can raft or kayak.

Rafting takes about 6 hours, and you hit about 7 areas of rapids...the rest is chilling, drinking the beer your brought in the cooler in the raft.

People tie their rafts together and float all day, hang out, pull over and watch others go through the rapids, etc.

Kayaking takes about 3 hours.

As said, great time, and I can't wait to go back.

Here's a clip of one of the rapids.

I should mention, this will be a family trip for me, wife, and 10 year old kid. No floating beer drinking stuff for me. I'm looking to possibly drown myself and family with wicked rapids, do some rapelling or rock climbing, nasty rocky mountain hikes, and general activity type of camping. Waterfalls, lakes, rivers, rocks, etc. Experience nature in it's rawest form. Bears, snakes, water buffalos. Whatever. I want it to be interesting and scary and active.

CP, I'm telling you, Wolf River is where it's at.

Campgrounds everywhere. All nature. 1 main road, nothing on it but a bar or 2 and a convenience store. We camped in a campground day 1, but the second night couldn't find it, so pulled off some dusty dirty road, drover for a while, found a nice spot, and pitched right there (at 3 am, you don't care where you sleep, plus not too many choices up there).

I'm with you on the wilderness thing. Love to get out and climb. Nothing like knowing you're the only person with X many miles, out on the mountains.

I went here last year http://www.rivermen.com/

And we had a BLAST!! I want to go back soon!!

It's in West Virginia so it was about a 9 hour drive but this place was awesome, we just made a fun road trip out of it!

We had a group go and made a weekend out of it, everyone did what they want. it was pretty easy to sign up and pay for what you wanted to do to, even tho you were in a group. So the planner didn't have to worry about paying and all that.

We ziplined, rapelled and did white water rafting. The boat I was in flipped and we got it on video, it seriously was fun!!

If I remember correctly, camping and all the activites cost about $300! Then we just brought our own food and cooked out!

The vid below is on fb so everyone might not be able to view it, but when you see a whole raft flip...that was us. I will admit it was scary but then AWESOME a few seconds later. Our guide said he was prolly gonna get in trouble but he had a blast
We flip around the 11 minute mark

I have only gone once and it was when I was young but I have always wanted to do this again. I smell a group CLB trip. I don't want to mess up this thread so maybe I will start a poll to pick a date for a weekend or day trip.

I'll go on a clsb camping trip as long as muffuckas understand that smoking weed is a very important part of camping.

The New River in West Virginia is good we did it last year but it is really good when they open the Dam in September.

I've done the Ocoee in Tennesse a few times as well. That is where they did the 1996 Olymics. Very good, hard fast class 5 rapids.

Both are 8 + hours away.

Agree with G-hop.....I've been going there few times a year (mostly climbing), but during summer they have lower New River, which is a lot more family friendly (mostly class 4 with some class 5), and there are camp grounds with rafting packages and they will also hook you up with climbing/repelling/Bouldering details.

There's a place in Michigan. I think they do the WWR at Menomenee River; they are in the upper peninsula of Michigan. I just can't remember the name.

It was near a campground so we put up tents for the night and went WWR the next morning too. It was a lot of fun.

Here's a picture from YEARS ago of my sister, friend and me.

Where is a good spot to go canoeing or rafting, camping within 3 hours of Chicago where they allow booze on the river? I'm strongly considering a camping trip 4th of July weekend.

Yes, it was fun, but it was a very mild ride. Just something to do that is close by.
