iPhone questions

So the Verizon web site is pretty crappy. Which means I turn to all of you tech nerds for some feedback.

Iím debating upgrading to an iPhone from my Samsung Rogue. Now, my current phone I am paying for a minute, data and text packages and after corporate discount gets me a $65/mo bill.

Itís an assumption on my part that I could stay with the same $40/mo minute package, but it gets real grey past that.

Is there an app to handle texting without using a Verizon based text service? If there is, would that be able to intercept people texting the phone direct or does it just mean to have someone text you, you have to get them some sort of hybrid number?

As far as data, are you stuck doing more than the basic $10 or even the ďunlimitedĒ $40/mo package? And is that truly ďunlimitedĒ or does it still have some sort of cap?

I know Iím going to want to be running Pandora while at work. Does anyone know how data intensive that is?

In a nutshell, what Iím looking to figure out is a ballpark $$/mo and what does that cover. Whatís the best way to handle texting and how mad is the data consumption?

Ciao,
Lupi

Be advised, Verizon's data plans are about to change and get even more complicated. No more unlimited data.

Pandora is moderately data intensive. I don't have exact figures I'm afraid.

In general, while their service is good, expect to pay a lot with Verizon

yes there are apps that can handle the texting, but then your using data. pandora is a data hog. Not sure on your unlimited question, as I have ATT and do have the unlimited package (grandfathered in)

If you're on a tight budget and want all the unlimited services, don't use Verizon.

Try Tmobile or Sprint.

If you have Verizon's $29.99 unlimited data plan, you'll be able to keep it after July 7.

You'll also be able to keep the $29.99 unlimited plan when you upgrade to a new phone. (No word on if there's a pricing difference or when that policy could change.)

If you add a line to an existing account, you'll not be able to chose the $29.99 unlimited data plan.

If you're a new customer between now and July 7, you'll still be able to choose the $29.99 plan.
So, I qualify for an upgrade on 7/3.

From Verizon's current wes site:
Quote:
Device Type | Monthly Access Per Line | Data Allowance | Rate After Allowance | Email Service
Feature Phones | ó | Pay per use | $1.99 per MB | $5
Feature Phones with data requirement | $10 | 75 MB | $10 per 75 MB | Included
Feature Phones, 3G & 4G Smartphones| $29.99 | Unlimited | ó | Included
Ok now, if I'm reading this right I have from 7/3 to 7/6 to decide what I'm going to do if I want to try and grandfather in the "unlimited" before the 7/7 changes go into effect?

It looks like the "starter" version for smart phones is 5GB for $30 on data under the new plan.

How easy/hard is it to hit 2GB?

Am I reading the Verizon info right?

Your interpretation is as good as mine, but I believe you are yes.

If you're a heavy data user and not relying on WiFi to supplement your data usage, then hitting 2GB in a month is fairly easy. I'm a heavy data user, doing a lot of surfing and music streaming, and consume about 2-3gbs on top of what I use via WiFi.

^^^^

I'm a moderate data user. I don't use Wifi at work, due to issues with IT blocking my mail server (keyholing?). I stream pandora occasionally all day, and use the iPad for youtube videos, etc. while at work (for work purposes obviously )

I have not yet hit my 2Gb/month limit. And typically average in the just over 1Gb/month.

I would highly recommend a texting plan of somesort. All smartphones are incredibly easy to text and be texted on.

I would start out with the smallest or 2nd smallest data plan. See if you hit the limit, then move up from there. If you can, use wifi at work and home.

I have a wi-fi i can link up to at work, but it Barricuda's the shit out of everything so it's about pointless to use.

I have a wi-fi at home as well. So as far as web usage it would pretty much be limited to at work which would be minimal and while traveling which is also minimal.

So that leads me to just get the "unlimited" (which i hear is actually about 5gb) adn grandfather it in.

Now, the other twist is I have an iTouch I use at home, so I'd probably never use the iPhone for anything but calls/texts at home. So I am weighing the value of even upgrading. I don't web sure of the Rogue because it converts so much to a text based system it sucks. Lol

Well you have a week or two to decide for yourself. Really boils down to asking yourself how you'll make use of the device, and if the new features are of any value to you or not.

Upgraded to an iPhone last night and bumped up to the unlimited data. The salesman who seemed to just love his job made absolutely no mention of the impending change. Not to even try and upsell me on anything.
