So long Q101

Whether you liked the station or not, it's been in Chicago for what seems like forever.

As of Friday, it'll be no more.

One less radio station to flip through while in the cage.

Merlin Media to take over Q101, The Loop, WRXP early

Quote:
Remember when Merlin Media purchased a majority stake in WLUP-FM, WKQX-FM (Q101), and New York's WRXP-FM from Emmis Communications and said it would take weeks for them to take over all three outlets, perhaps as soon as mid-August.

Well, scrap that: those changes now take place this week.

Merlin announced today it will take over the operations of all three stations via a local marketing agreement on Friday, which means the Alternative/Modern Rock format will be exiting Q101 and WRXP earlier than planned. Both stations are expected to flip to a news/talk format on Friday. No word yet on who the personalities will be for either station.

With the announcement, the entire on-air staff at both stations have been released from their contracts as of Thursday. Out at Q101 are morning personalities Brian Sherman & Steve Tingle; midday personality Christine "Electra" Pawlak; night jock Tim Pogo; afternooner Tim Virgin; and various fill-in and weekend jocks.

The move also marks the end of the Alternative/Modern Rock format at Q101 after 19 years and the end of the Q101 monkier after more than 30 years.

Meanwhile, there are no changes planned for The Loop, which for now remains Merlin Media's sole music outlet.

With the departure of Q101 and WRXP, Alternative/Modern Rock loses two of the top three markets and the number count reporting to Mediabase drops to 68, a blow for an already struggling format.

Bummer. Man there's nothing left for harder rock, unless you can get WillRock or whatever it is out of Wisconsin. 95.1 I think?

Yes its 95.1. we still have a few hard rock ones here. 94.1 WJJO (madison) & 105.9 The Hog (local)

2 formats that irritate the hell out of me is talk radio and kiddie music (pop 40 crap like spears, lady gag gag and such).

Really funny hearing advertisments on SATELLITE RADIO now.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

the same company that bought Q101 bought the Loop.

if you're north you can pick up 95.1 for rock. Also the college stations can be okay but have short range; 89.3(Northwestern), 88.7(Loyola), Triton college used to have a good station, I don't know anymore.

elektra has sounded like she was about to cry all day.

I can't imagine those stations are losing money.

With the infusion of cash from this deal any chance this Emmis Communications is taking the opportunity to kind of clean house and setup a new rock/alt station elsewhere on the dial? the DJ's already know something.

Ha, I still live within range. They really do kick some serious ass at times on that channel. Old fashioned, non corporate dictated format.

I'll miss the music selection since they play lots of bands I love but I HATED any and ALL of the DJ's so completely.

If they cut the DJ's and just kept the music, I'd be incredibly happy.

It's not about losing money, it's about MAXIMIZING the profits. Talk radio is cheaper, as there are no music royalties to ASCAP and BMI, and the on-air personalities in talk radio generally make less as well. Plus, in talk radio you can easily squeeze in a couple of extra minutes/hr in spots, without pissing off the listeners as much

I understand. But where I was going with that was if it is still a profitable venture, even though potentially not as profitable as something else, there should be another entity ready to enter a market segment that is really pretty ripe for the picking in a huge market.

Something should come up to replace them. If not, well, that sucks.

It started before that. I remember listening to Murphy in the Morning in the car with my mom - this had to be late 80s.

Sherman and Tingle has been a decent listen on the commute to work.

Sirius/XM... yeah they're ok, but I just can't pay for radio. I'm a cheap bastage like that. I have listened to XM when my wife had it some years back and now while we enjoy the free 3 months on our new Highlander... but I can't bring myself to pay for it.

This sucks. First we lose 104.3 and now 101.1 Damn.

I bet it's all the internet and satellite radio nowadays. Chicago radio does suck.

They didn't do it last year either ... perhaps it was a sign that things at the station weren't all that well even then?
