Does your family worry...

about you when you're on your motorcycle?

I'm 18 and recently bought a cheap bike that works well, just isn't so pretty.

I don't work often, but i work enough that i have a few checks on the way. I tried to borrow some money from my dad for a jacket, and his reply was, "What? Are you pussying out already?" I did get my mom to lend me money for gloves though. My dad thinks the full face helmet is for keeping bugs out of my teeth and didn't understand why i felt that my helmet is one size too large. He told me that i spent enough already (i'm only about 1100 in including bike, title, registration, insurance, and my helmet) and that if i wanted to be safe i shouldn't have gotten a bike. Neither one of my parents were against the idea of a motorcycle, and my dad would periodically ask me why i hadn't gotten a bike already because i had been talking about it for a while.

Are my parents fucking weird?

They are not weird, they just have an odd ass way of pointing out their dissatisfaction that you are 18 and still hitting them up for money instead of saving up and buying it yourself when you have the money.

Everyone Exaggerates

mom cared about just wearing a helmet. She knows I've been riding bikes when I was a kid. And for me to pay for my own bike and expenses.

+1 They are probably in a tight financial situation.

And it looks like your dad is the nutty one, not your mom.

Hahaha...no fucking kidding.

I NEVER borrow money from them. Paying for my own college too. It's not the fact that i won't pay them back. When i told my dad that i needed a new helmet, i said i was going to buy one. He asked me why the fuck i needed a new one already, i've had this one for only a year, and i paid $100 for it.

They are in a tight financial situation. Very tight. But like i said, they think that i'm spending too much of my own money on it.

All parents are weird, plus, they unless they were riders themselves they will not understand this expensive craziness you got yourself into.

What size helmet and jacket do you need?

My dad was a rider for a while so i'm actually surprised he isn't bigger on safety. My mom would occasionally ride on the back. She doesn't say much about me riding.

I don't have money to spend right now so i'd rather not ask if any one has gear they wanna get rid of.

And yes your parents are weird they just don't have an understanding of "safe" riders.

I don't feel weird. I'm sure they want me to be as safe as possible. I don't think they understand the difference some gear can make.

Really? I'd rather have my kid on a track than on a street. It's not the speed that kills, it's stopping suddenly. No intersections to be t-boned at, and no lightpoles to slide into.

Its because of what happened back when I raced cars in the late 80's. Not about me getting physically hurt, but if it would bring back the nightmares I had.

Wow, that's insanely low! I spent $1800 on my first bike... not including gear. And I'm still a gear whore, I've gone through multiple textile jackets, boots, helmets, gloves... damn. :
My parents know my gear-whoriness, but I think they understand why I don't keep it all; it's almost always some sort of safety concern that makes me resell the gear I don't like. Some of my gear has been repurposed; for instance, my first pair of moto gloves are now shooting gloves. It's all about *level* of safety for me; a motorcycle is less safe than a car, but that doesn't mean that it needs to be absolutely unsafe.

The first time I showed my dad a gigantic rock chip in my helmet from riding on the highway, I told him that I was glad it hadn't hit my face.
He agreed.

Yeah, I could have paid less. I just wanted the bike to work without me having to put money for parts or mechanical skill I don't have into it.
It was a fugly lil' ninja 250 that I sold two years later for $200 less than I bought it for. I'm okay with that.

No, i didn't buy a jacket from anybody. It's alright...i got a pm about a jacket from greg (gsd656) and he said he has a helmet in medium also. Told him i'd save the pm for when i get paid so that i can pay something for them.

The bike costed me 750, and i haven't put another dime into it other than some oil and carb cleaner in the tank. I've put over 2000 on it already, including two trips up to wisconsin to my grandparents' house (4 hours each way).

My gloves came in the mail today, and i showed them to my dad. He said, "What? The bars vibrate too much for your pansy ass?" I told them they were to protect my hands in the event of me going down, and he told me the gloves would do no good.

I told him he'd be pissed that i didn't have the protective gear if i did end up with a bunch of road rash and shit, and he replied, "No.....I'd be pissed that your dumb ass crashed probably doing something stupid." Hahaha fucking old people.
