Ipad 2 or Xoom

Ok, I know the apple fan boys will come out of the wood work here but I'd like to hear an honest opinion on the two. Does anyone here have both?

Looking to get a tablet for the wife/kids.

Thanks

Don't forget the Asus Transformer or Acer tablet. Acer tab is 399 + comes with a $100 Target gift card this week. It is in this weeks sales paper.
Looks pretty bad ass.

I'm very happy with my iPad 2. What's their inteded use? No flash does suck, but I don't run into that problem often. Just my opinion, but I feel like the Apple O/S is more user friendly.

The iPad 2 will be a bit slimmer and lighter than the Xoom. For Android, the Samsung Tab 10.0 will be comparably sized to the iPad 2. For some, that little bit of weight and slimness difference makes a huge difference and impact. For others, eh, who cares.

Both are solid tablet platforms. Android is still growing by leaps and bounds, and every day, their app selection continues to grow and easily rival Apple's.

Is cost an issue? The iPad 2 haven't really shifted in price at all, whereas sales have been offered for the Xoom, 10.1, and Transformer. Keep your eyes peeled for those.

How much do you like iTunes? Above all this is what keeps me from all apple products.

If I were going to buy a tablet today it would likely be the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1.

1) Price is no issue.

2) Intended use will be apps for the kids (4,3 yrs old) and probably some basic emailing for the wife and pictures..etc (wife stuff lol)

3) I'll take a look at that Samsung

I need to buy this today so hope to make a decision by lunch time.

If it's for younger children, then there's no need to get the best of the best. Maybe even try and find an iPad 1.

I would also strongly recommend a solid case & screen protector. Otterbox is among the best. My gal got an iPad 1 earlier this year, paired it with an Otterbox Defender case, and uses it with her autistic K-5 students with great success.

If it were me I would get the asus eee transformer over anything else. After that I would go ipad. For kids I'm sure flash content would be nice so skip the ipad.

Two people I know bought Xoom and within 3 weeks returned it and bought an iPad 2. Both are much happier with iPad. I've played with Xoom myself and in the end I bought an iPad 2. I'm hardly Apple fanboy: I don't own a Mac, I hate Apple's attitude and I absolutely loathe iTunes. Yet, I believe that they got iPad 2 right. Android tablets may match or exceed the functionality of iPad, but the user experience is not nearly as smooth.

Flash is not a big issue, at least for me.

Just a note..... for kids, the iTunes app store is "adult" free. No porn... etc. Just a thought there. It sucks for adults (I like my porn), but it IS kid friendly.

An iPad1 would be a cheap alternative, if you don't want to get the cheapest iPad2.

Xoom is the worst...so ipad 2 wins that...but really...Asus Eee Pad (transformer) wins all. I have it, researched a lot, bought it, love it.

Removable/expandable memory FTW (On the Asus).

As far as the Samsung 10.1 is concerned, note that Samsung finally just rolled out their new TouchWiz UI for their own tablets. Reviews on that have been positive thus far. So don't fully discount the user experience on all Android tablets just yet.

I'm a fan of Android but the Xoom should be seen as an experimental tablet for Android, just now they're giving you 4G functionality and I think you have to send it in for them to do it. I would stick with an Ipad 1, they can be had on craigs for less than anything new on the market. Especially if you plan to use it just for emailing.

Well... I ended up with the iPad 2 just based on ease of use for the wife and kids.

If it was for me personally... I did like the Asus Transformer. Seemed like a lot of bang for the buck but for my wife/kids it would of been a little challenging to learn.

Thanks all for the input.

Check out the refurb iPad 1's on apple.com and save a few bucks.

I just gave my daughter (3.5 years old) my 32 gig version and ordered myself a 3G iPad 1 as I needed the wireless. she loves it and my wife has it loaded with educational apps for her.

Are the kids going to play games? Nick jr and the like? If so, skip the ipad. Almost all kid sites are flash based.

For what it’s worth. My iPad got ripped off and I've replaced it with a Xoom. It seems to be a hot machine especially for the price. If anyone is interested here are my thoughts on it vs. the iPad.

Pros:
Lower cost. $499 new and refurbs are available with a one year warrantee for $399 for a 32 gig wifi tablet and I just spotted a new one on eBay for $440. I don’t need 3G as my EVO is a 4G wireless hotspot.
Easy to upgrade from 32 to 64 gigs if you need it with a $50 sim card.
Fast dual core processor with a full gig of ram.
Great screen!
Solid feel.
Good cameras.
It immediately did an OTA to 3.2 which corrects most of the old OS issues. From an OS basis it seems to be as good as any Droid based tablet. I’ve only been able to lock it up once and that was done by my 10 year old with one of her games. I still don’t know what she did.
It seems to allow more user customization.
Email support is at least as good as the iPad if not better.
FLASH!!!! Don’t kid yourself, the lack of flash on the iPad sucks.
The web browser is much better than Safari. True tabbed browsing is much easier to deal with.
Android market vs. iStore.
I think the Xoom has more future upgrade potential than the iPad.

Cons:
It isn’t an Apple.
It is a little heavier than an iPad.
Odd position of the ON button and some of the ports.
Battery life is good, but not quite on par with an iPad. It could be my screen settings as that is where 60+% of the battery is going, but it really is a great screen.
Harder to get accessories.
Android market vs. iStore. Yes it is a pro and con. Both have advantages and disadvantages.
I miss my iTunes.
Everyone asks why I didn’t buy an iPad.

Overall, I’m quite content with the purchase. I do miss some of the Apple apps, at least till I find strong alternates. In example Apple has a mobile version of One Note which I’ve been using on my office desktop. With Android I seem to be stuck with Evernote. I liked One Note’s integration with Office more. SalesForce doesn’t have a mobile version for Android either although it works fine in the Browser.

$.02.
