Buying Gold.

ampex.com

I see that site that Jeremy links in the other thread. has anyone actually bought small gold bars? I keep a certain amount in cash locked away, but if the countries economy truly fails, cash may become worthless. I'm seriously considering changing to Gold.

question is, does anyone know the ins and outs of buying gold. I don't want to get ripped off and obviously want to make sure I'm making a safe investment.

http://www.apmex.com/Product/50124/1...Sept_2nd_.aspx

thoughts?

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

I bought from apmex around christmas time, a small gold bar for the GF, just keep an eye at how much over "spot" you are paying, there might be some better deals out there, but apmex is a big name so you know you can trust them. The bar shipped via postal service and arrived just fine. For larger purchases I think things get a little trickier but they have info on their site. Another option is to buy locally from places that deal gold coins and such. You'll probably pay a little bit more but you won't have shipping hassles.

Two years ago most people said gold was peaking, and its only gone up. So T might be the first one on CLSB to be work $100M.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Another option tony is silver, 1oz silver coins are cheaper so if you did need some cash you can sell them off in smaller quantities ($30-$40) at a time as apposed to a $600 gold bar.

No way its near peak. All that is needed is a little inflation, and gold will continue to go up.

"includes 10 used-car dealers or auto repair shops, 11 liquor stores and bars--two of which advertise lingerie fashion shows and a third billed as a "gentlemen's club"--three cut-rate motels and one trailer park. The squat, brick municipal building is next to a currency exchange and a few steps from an adult video store. The bars open at 10 a.m. and close at 6:30 a.m."

Buy based on what you think is going to happen:

1. Economy continues to tank, gold goes up.
2. Economy rebounds, gold goes down.

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

If you're looking at a long term investment, be sure to consider it as part of your entire portfolio. Gold can be considered cash or bonds (even though it is a slightly better hedge against inflation.) Depending on your age, you'll only want a small percentage of your portfolio in cash / bonds / gold.

Besides gold, you can also buy other currencies, like the Euro or Pound. (If the U.S. goes to shit..... their currency holds its value.) Consider gold like a universal currency, since you're only going to trade it for other goods.

I think gold is high right now.... there are other "safe" investments that might have less of a downside and the equivalent hedge against the dollar going to crap.

Bought a bunch of gold coins when it was around 500 an oz or so... pretty happy with that investment. I don't know if I would buy any more at this point.

Due to recent budget cuts and the rising cost of electricity, gas, and oil,

Tony you can try this place.

http://www.midasresources.com/

They are very helpful and from what I've seen have decent deals. Once you've dealt with them you have one point of contact, he/she essentially becomes your broker at no cost to you. Silver is the place to look for the price. Gold is still expected to hit $2500 this year, and that's according to JP Morgan. However, silver could push $70+.

I would stay away from Kitco...even though they are huge in the industry last I heard they were being investigated by Canada.

I'm not worried about the economy collapsing. You'd hear alot more if the U.S Economy collapsed, there would be weeks of armageddon talk etc. Worse case scenario the U.S money would be devalued but you wouldnt lose it all.

Besides, if the economy collapsed and we all turned into motorcycle riding gangs of thugs I'd just break into peoples homes and steal their gold and eat their kids. So in retrospect, BUY IT!
