Pushing your bike....

So I just read in another thread of someone running out of gas, and it made me question something. If you run out of gas, or break down on a busy 4 lane road is it illeagal to push your bike down the sidewalk, if there is one, to keep safe? Would a cop hassle you for that?

Technically yes. Realistically it's very unlikely they'll hassle you.

I pushed mine about a mile and a half down Eola rd on the sidewalk when I first got it. It was dark and nothing on my bike worked so it would have been pretty dangerous since there are curbs on either side. Didn't get hassled.

I pushed mine from Roosevelt and meyers all the way to Roosevelt and main, right down the sidewalk, cops just drove by.

HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

Technically at that point I'm a pedestrian so they can go fuck themselves if they want to hassle me for being safe LOL! Would be nice if they offered a ride, though!

Ride smart... stupid hurts.

Everyone crashes. Some get back on. Some don't. Some can't...

Godspeed 788!!! We miss you!

Done it a few times. One cop went and gave me a bottle of water one time since it was hot as hell.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

Honestly, I think it would be illegal to push it anywhere other than the sidewalk (see 625 ILCS 5/11‑1007) if one is present. In any case, I agree that (a) the police in general would rather see that, than have to respond to the crash between an overtaking car and the bike, and (b) at the worst, a judge would probably throw out the ticket on the grounds that it was the safest possible alternative (as well as a waste of time to prosecute).

I’ve pushed mine many times, but the cops come and just ask the problem and then leaves, there are some good cops and the there are some big heads and getting caught to them is like a nightmare.
