Engine for my old ass bike

Anybody know any good salvage yards in the area? Or somebody who would have an 81 suzuki gs650 for parts? I've lost 2nd gear recently, and i'm looking to find an engine during the colder months including a few other things.

I dunno what the hell i'm doing but i'm assuming the 2nd gear dogs are worn. I can downshift into 2nd fine, but if i accelerate in 2nd it pops out at about 4-5k rpm and goes into 3rd. Or maybe a bad shiftfork not putting it all the way into gear? I'm thinking that would affect downshifting also though.

Yeah that's why i'm looking for an engine I'd have no clue what i'm looking at and what to do. This is my daily rider, not a project.

you need to remove the engine either way, you'll need to split the cases to see the trans, the dogs are most likley rounded off and you'll need to replace both gears on the shaft, sounds like a nice winter project to me, or if you dont want a project, sell it as is and buy another vintage zuk, but get a GS xxx E model like an early 80's 750 or 1100, avoid the 650 and 850 shafties if you want any degree of sportieness

Some guy was over at Gus's house last night. I think he said he has a GS650 for sale. I wonder how much he wants.

Not sure who the guys was. PM Gus.

I'm just worried i'll end up with a project bike sitting in pieces in the garage worth nothing because i'm inexperienced. Who sells a good manual that would show splitting the case and removing the gears?

By the way, thanks for any and all help guys. Dealing with people who know nothing is hard, i know.

The problem is that i'm not attempting anything right now...that's all. I know i can get one off ebay, was just wondering if there's local places that would have one and any other parts i may be looking for.

Yeah that's what I was thinking. For what people are asking for the motors you can get a clean-ish running bike from that era.

see if you have the tools to even remove the engine from the drive shaft.

I had to find a large hex socket for my bike.

That was me. I have an 82 GS650G, but can't seem to part with it. Makes a great buddy bike.

To the OP, if you want GS specific help go here...
www.thegsresources.com
It's a really friendly board, and they know everything GS. There are links to repair manuals in PDF that you can download for free. Just do a search before you post, because all the info you need is already up somewhere.

Hell no, those bike last for freaking ever and make decent power too. They took some shit when they came out for their looks but their performance is better than most bikes of that vintage. IMO they make awesome looking Cafe Racers due to the interesting looking powerplant.

Fuck it i'm gonna make it a winter project. I'm gonna buy another engine and drop it in there, and work on some cosmetics. Shooting for under $500 after everything, including a rear tire haha. I think i'll like it more than just some other shitty bike knowing i fixed it up. Then i'll work on the current engine off the bike. That way i can learn some shit without fucking up my daily rider, and have a spare.
