Teachers union president says Mayor Emanuel ‘exploded’ at her

The president of the Chicago Teachers Union says Mayor Rahm Emanuel “exploded” at her during a debate over a longer school day, pointing his finger in her face, yelling and cursing.

CTU President Karen Lewis made the allegations in a Friday morning press release detailing a complaint filed by the union to the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board over the ongoing battle between the union and City Hall.

“A couple of weeks ago I sat down with the mayor in his office to talk about how to roll out a longer school year and what components would go into making it a better school year for our students but he did not want to have that conversation,” said Lewis. “When I explained to him that a longer school day should not be used for warehousing or babysitting our youth he exploded, used profanity, pointed his finger in my face and yelled. At that point the conversation was over — soon thereafter we found ourselves subject to a full-scale propaganda war over a moot point.”

Asked for his version of the incident at an event Friday with U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan, Emanuel said “I’m not going to get into a he-said, she-said. ... We had a good meeting. ... She hugged me at the end of the meeting.”

However, Lewis, the CTU and its parent union, the Illinois Federation of Teachers were conspicuously absent from Friday’s event featuring key players in passing Illinois new school reform bill. All had been invited.

Duncan took the opportunity to tell a crowd of mostly officials and reporters that “teachers have been beaten down too long” and “I think we need to double the salaries for teachers... Great teachers should make $130,000, $140,000, $150,000. They shouldn’t have to wait to age 55 to make a good living. They shouldn’t have to take a vow of poverty.”

The teachers union on Thursday filed its first major legal salvo in the battle over a longer school day as Lewis charged that district brass and the mayor had “declared war’’ on the union through an illegal campaign to bypass it.

The union’s complaint with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board Illinois National Labor Relations Board came as teachers at a fourth school — Benjamin Mays Elementary in Englewood — voted to waive the existing CTU contract and add 90 more minutes to the school day in exchange for 2 percent raises and other perks.

At other schools, the CTU complaint alleged, the district conducted “sham elections” with non-union members, “intimidated” some teachers with the threat of layoffs and offered “inducements’’ to others “in an attempt to bypass the CTU’’ and the wages it already negotiated.

“They are going around us to negate the contract with our members, and that is unlawful,’’ Lewis said.

“This is just out-and-out disrespect and war. That’s what this is. This is an attempt to take down and make irrelevant the Chicago Teachers Union because if the CTU goes, they can roll over every union in the city.’’

Thursday’s CTU complaint contends waivers should be canceled at two schools — STEM Magnet and Skinner North — that allegedly conducted “sham elections’’ by allowing non-CTU members to vote. Systemwide, it asks that CPS be barred from “dealing directly’’ with employees about the length of the school day and extra compensation for it.

At STEM Magnet, the complaint charged, teachers were told the school STEM would be “the mayor’s new pet’’ if they approved a longer-day waiver. Mayor Emanuel later made his first school appearance of the new school year at STEM.

At Skinner, according to the complaint, the principal directed direced three non-CTU members who initially declined to vote to do so after the first ballot on the issue came back tied, 6-6.

CPS spokeswoman Becky Carroll said the CTU contract gives individual schools the right to waive any part of the contract they want. She said the CTU complaint was “ill-advised” and “lacks merit

Personally I agree, teachers deserve a lot more money. Sure you read about the top people in school districts making big money but the average teacher makes pennies.

Too bad no one here seems to know how to do an elegant, adult, intelligent debate. Guess their teachers didn't teach them nothin'.

Yeah, I agree teachers should make more money but it should be merit based, not automatic. Just like in the real world if you are a shitty employee you make shitty money with little opportunity for advancement. If you are a great employee you get regular raises and promotions.

You cannot help the poor by destroying the rich.
You cannot strengthen the weak by weakening the strong.
You cannot bring about prosperity by discouraging thrift.
You cannot lift the wage earner up by pulling the wage payer down.
You cannot further the brotherhood of man by inciting class hatred.
You cannot build character and courage by taking away people's initiative and independence.
You cannot help people permanently by doing for them, what they could and should do for themselves.

To a degree, I agree with that. It just seems ridiculous that in order to just get the shittiest of raises on top of an already shitty salary, that they have to constantly argue for it every year.

Teachers get great pay for working part time. They take the job not to get rich if they wanted to make more money they can get a non goverment job.

You obviously don't know any teachers. Three people in my family are teachers... none of them work part time. Just because school hours are 8-3, doesn't mean they aren't grading papers or doing lesson plans until 5 or 6.

I would argue the job of teachers is just as important as that of police or firefighters. You probably think they're overpaid also though.

I agree to a point, they should get more money but also turn out a better product. Too many teachers just got for a paycheck (and I know many who think this) and kids now a days are just plain DUMB.

I agree, but kids aren't going to get smarter with a low moral in the teaching ranks. My cousin (4.0 GPA, honors, etc) graduated 2 years ago from EIU with a degree in teaching and she works for St. Ben's (non-government) making like $13/hour. She still lives at home with her parents because she can't afford student loans and rent, etc.

parents need to stop blaming teachers for thier lack of parenting ability. teach your fucking kids to pay attention and take pride in their work and they might learn something. unlikely since the parents are prolly a waste of flesh and bone to begin with. easier to finger point. stick with that.

I think that the pay for teachers is right where it should be-- for only working 8 months out of the year.

EDIT: and my Mom, Aunt, Uncle and two grandparents are/were teachers.

Funny, the teachers in my kids district are making decent coin (45k for 1st year teacher wither the highest making over 100k)

What is also funny that I also take work home with me and work 8-5 without Cadillac benefits and have to work through summer, x-mas break, spring break and all the other holidays the schools are out. Boo f'ing hoo for the teachers!

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. WTF?

Duncan took the opportunity to tell a crowd of mostly officials and reporters that “teachers have been beaten down too long” and “I think we need to double the salaries for teachers... $130-150K a year maybe a college professer with a PHD, do they actually think some 5th grade teacher should make $150k a year they are high. Whats funny is go to asia or Europe they dont make anything near that and produce better students.

My wife unfortunatly went that route and when she enters the work force when our youngest hits 1st grade its for $12 a hr with a B.S. with a m.S. maybe $15, in comparison - Illiegal temp factory workers that come here to work the production line at my company make like $14 per hr, full time line workers here make $13-$20 per hr - that degree is useless!

She should have done her research better on teacher pay, its like my wife with ehr Social work degree fucking usless if you want to be self sufficent. If this was 200 yrs ago it would be like going to school to learn how to fight dragons or to be a knight - fucking useless! Tell her to open up a Gloryhole and have her post a pic of herself in her teaching outfit with glasses on and post it on the other side of the wall of the glory hole where the guys can see it while she services them - shell instantly bump up her income by $50,000 a year for a extra 5 hrs per week!

Now a days the school district administration is the one screwing the teachers not the government. The gap in pay between administrators and teachers is ridiculous and its become common practice to flat out fire any non tenured teacher at the end of the year and make them reapply for their own jobs back every summer. I have a number of friends that teach and the way they get treated by their administration should be considered criminal.

A lot of teachers are way out of touch with what most call a normal work environment. My girlfriend is a special ed teacher in Markham and can't understand why I have to work weekends, stay late during the week, and if I want more money I have to work harder and faster to produce more. It's completely foreign to her.

She works hard don't get me wrong. She's often up late grading papers and doing lesson plans, but the time off every year is astounding. If a teacher wants to make 100k a year they better be working all year like the rest of us do. I work 60 hours a week 52 weeks a year. She works 40 to maybe 50 hours a week and is off a 4 to 5 months a year with full pay and outstanding benefits.

The problem with kids starts at home. You dumb fucks are producing stupid children and sending them to schools expecting them to work miracles with those little idiots. And, when your little monkeys come home dumb as a box of rocks you blame the teachers and say they should work harder, longer and for less money.

Now I'm sure every one of you that has kids, or your sister has a couple, or your best friend etc, is thinking that it's not your kids, it's the other fucks in the world not mine, right? Are you sure? Someone is producing these idiots. I'd suggest you spend more time working with them and less time blaming teachers for being such slugs. And if you really want quality results from teachers stop badgering, spitting out insults, complaining about your own working situation and start supporting the teachers, at home and in the schools.

Then there's the...well I don't have kids...people out there who think this shit doesn't effect them. Good for you you moron. We are a united people who need to support each other and work together for everyone's benefit and that attitude is worthless and just plain wrong.

Fuck You...

Self respecting chicks are over rated. Low self-esteem and daddy issues are where it's at!

I would disagree with you on this one. My friend is a teachers union president, no I will not say which location. and he tells my how some of them bitch and moan while making some good money for working 9 month a year. 60-70+k for working 9 month is a GOOD pay.

Should they be making more? Yes, those that deserve. But when there thousands of people w/o job where the fuck are you supposed to get the money to give them that raise?

UNIONS needs to get the fuck down from the clouds and smell the fucking ashes. While private sector looses jobs they are bitching that they are not getting their 5% increase.

Teachers often do stay at school late working. And they do take work home with them as well. But like you said, it is 9 months a year, actually much less when you factor in spring break, Christmas break, thanksgiving, and all the other paid holidays they get. It's probably more like 7 and a half months.

I'll make close to 70k this year, but I (like the rest of you, more than likely) work 12 months.
