My Local Ace Hardware is Closing

Sonofabitch. I love that place...and it's like 2 mins down the road.

This is going to add stress to the already stressful moments that call for a quick run to the hardware store.

Yeah seriously, they're just going to have to blow up that entire stretch of retail and go back to farming

Such a bummer. I can't tell you how many times the "big box" stores with all of their shit didn't have the stupid little item I was looking for...and Ace did. That and it's so damn convenient in our neighborhood.

Actually just stagnant economy. Lowe's in Schaumburg closed down and they ARE the big box competition.

Not to mention little things like getting keys cut was super easy as opposed to going over to 34

That sucks. We had a hardware store in Park Forest that had everything specifically for the houses. He had window latches, plumbing and specific parts that are for the Park Forest homes built in the 50s. That place has been gone for years. There is still an Ace and True Value near my house which is good. But they have to be struggling.

That's the thing...everything else around us is such a damn pain in the ass to get to. That place always looked pretty busy, everyone else must be spending only $10 a trip too.

I'm not saying that big boxes can't fail for a myriad of various issues, just that those two will definitely bring down a little guy, if you consider your local Ace Hardware that. The Lowe's by us closed as well, but I would say that is just plain old competition moreso than economy. Being jaded is a whole different topic though.

It might also have something to do with Ace demanding more royalty from the franchise owners than the stores can give. The Ace down the street from me switched to independent and when I asked them why that's what they told me. They stock a lot less stuff and have about half the staff as well. I miss what it used to be but at least they still have that gigantic collection of single nuts, bolts and screws that I raid every so often. Without them I'd have to buy packs of fasteners from Home Depot.

If you guys need tools the Sears Hardware on Barrington Road in Scumburg is closing. I went there 2 weeks ago and they had their stuff dropped to the 20-30% mark and there was still a decent amount of good tools left. I think I'll go check it out today to see what's left. I picked up a 1/2" drive ft/lbs torque wrench for a steal. I bet they're up to the 40% discount point now.

Yeah this Ace just started carrying Craftsman so I'll be in there pronto to see what's left. Should be pretty much everything right now, I just got the email today.

Well that should help them stay in business. I hate having to spend a full $2 when I can get away with only 18 cents instead.

No really, that's one of the great things about Ace. I can go in there and get 3 screws, 2.5' of 16 GA wire and some alligator clips for $5...instead of spending $10 to get all three in bigger bulk.

Yep, I like ACE. They have the little things big stores do not and really work on customer service well. Also nice to fly right through the line with your .50 cents worth of screws rather then wait in line for 20 mins at a big box place.

That's a big Ace, and doing pretty well. The owner drives a silver Cayman.

Ace and True Value are hurting a bit by the stagnant economy, but I don't think they've had to close too many stores.

Truth be told they're probably in as good a position as any. Having smaller stores and less overhead is a benefit right now. I'd wager the big box retailers are actually hurting financially worse than the smaller guys are...depending of course on where you are.

Our neighborhood is going rental big time. When the actual homeowners are not living in the area, you can imagine what happens to the home improvement needs.

Have you seen the new mini- Best Buy stores, BB Express? I wouldn't be surprised if Lowes and HD tried this tactic out and took up more of Ace's and TV's market share.

My local Ace is always busy. I hope it stays there for a long time. Like Nick said, they stock all the weird stuff for the 50-60 year old houses in my neighborhood. The best thing they have is the knowledge of the old guys who have been working there forever.

Definitely. The staff there is in general far more knowledgeable than the bozos I generally run in to at the big box places.

I dunno, I've seen it slow here and there but it's usually pretty busy. Not packed or anything, but steady enough it seems. I guess not...of course, who knows why they're closing. Could be owners moving or retiring, maybe they're even just bailing on the ACE franchise tag and going solo. I hope so.

...as for the rental market, I hear a nice place might be opening up in the spring
