Looking to start a new forum

I am beginning my research here for starting/running/maintaining an online forum. This forum will be for non-motorcycle related things.

I have no idea what all is involved as far as how to get started, creating a forum, hosting cost, maintaining etc etc.

I would appreciate any and all guidance from the admins/owners here or peeps who may have information to help me get started.

Thanks

Step 1: buy a motorcycle and join CLSB
Step 2: ask CLSB to create a subforum for your other interests
Step 3: enjoy with no work

Step one: Get a web hosting package that is open source (linux preferably)
Step two: install vBulletin or other popular forum software
Step three: populate it with interesting topics and 'start a dialogue' with others to make it successful.
Step four: keep at it daily, if not hourly and make sure updates are done in a timely manner.

Use this site to help you choose your system: http://www.forummatrix.org/wizard.php

See this comment:
http://www.theadminzone.com/forums/s...ad.php?t=19051

"What are the most common administrative mistakes you see new admins making?

Creating too many forums. If you are just starting a new board with a few members, there is no need for 100+ subforums - as there will only be a few posts anyway. I think it’s enough to start with a few forums (Site Feedback/Problems, General Small-Tals/OT-Forum, 1-3 “Topic Forums”), and only add new forums when they really become necessary."

Good luck.

Yes, it's very, very disturbing. I'm going to have nightmares for the rest of my life because of that link.

(Don't worry, it's safe for work. Seriously. )
