I was a kid when Reagan was president but I remember very well how much the press vilified him. From Iran/Contra (remember Oliver North?), to selling weapons to Saddam Hussein, the massive military build up (anyone remember the goal of a 600-ship navy?) that put us hugely into debt, sending arms to the Afghanistan Mujaheddin (who are those guys fighting now), trickle-down Reagan-nomics, and best of all him testifying repeatedly "I do not recall."

I've said this time and again, people romanticize the past. I liked the 80s, "He who dies with the most toys wins." But things weren't all fantastic; in fact does anyone remember what happened near the end of the 80s? A little market collapse called Black Monday.

I'll be SOOO glad when the Republicans take back the presidency and Congress. Then everything will be fixed and no one will complain ever again.

Actually it'll be nice to see all the conservatives on this board defend a president instead of attacking him, and all the liberals will have lots of ammo to go on the offensive instead of being on the defensive.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

This has nothing to do with Reagan or partisan politics. Obama has been an unmitigated disaster. Give me one area that matters, ONE that has improved since 2008. I would take Bill Clinton over this guy any damn day of the week. Shit I would take almost anyone in American Presidential history over him. He clearly stepped in to the White House full of confidence that he "knew better" than most of us, that his plans would work and carry him into history...turns out the real world is quite different than the ideological world of a college campus

He's a cheerleader, a pep rally speaker...not a leader. That has become quite clear. Great leaders don't make excuses, they don't blameshift and scapegoat. They get things done, and they do so in a way that makes everyone feel bound together as one...especially in tough times. President Obama has done almost precisely the opposite.

2012.

LOL, when has any president lived up to campaign expectations? I'm not defending Obama, I'm pretty pissed that the taxes coming out of my paycheck keep going up. Bush was a disaster, too. Still waiting to find all those WMDs in Iraq. And if I recall the housing collapse happened on his watch.

Clinton was a lying poon-hound.

Bush Sr... well I think he was great. He didn't get re-elected because he put the good of the country before his own political career.

Reagan - you saw my previous post

Carter - well what can I say here...

Tom, you'd take pretty much any president over Obama, but I bet you that if you were the same age you are now only 30 or more years ago you'd be saying the same thing: I'd take almost any previous president over the current one.

Rose-colored glasses, my friend.

BAAAHAHAHAHAH...30 years ago was Carter! The guy Obama is neck and neck with...so yeah, you'd be absolutely correct!

Look, this is not a typical "we don't like the guy in office" deal. Obama has led the country into new and dire territory in virtually every economic measurable. Sure, it was already jacked when he got in courtesy of a pretty awful President....but somehow he has managed to make it MUCH worse.

You can think it's just "rose colored glasses" all you like, but for me personally....a person that has spent a lifetime studying and being fascinated with American history this is just unprecedented. Not living up to campaign expectations? The man that ran on a platform as a "unifier", a fixer of the political norm, has turned out to be one of the most divisive, partisan, political machine Presidents we've ever had.

Quite literally, just about anyone but President Obama. I really do think he's a decent enough guy, I just don't think he understands the economic engines of this country well enough in a real world sense to implement any semblance of a policy that will get us out of this mess. Shit his newest idea is the exact same as the last idea that did nothing but beef up the debt and line the pockets of the public sector...and simultaneously he wants to remove so much of the investment incentives in the midst of a terrible recession and mucked up mortgage industry.

It just makes no sense....actually, it does if you understand that our President, our leader has moved away from leading the nation and towards leading his 2012 campaign effort.

2012 indeed.

He knows that jobs plan isn't going anywhere. It's political fodder to get support from his base and use as ammunition against the GOP, to make them appear to be non-action based, blockers of progress. Nonsense of course, but it's clear that's the strategy...oh, and to label himself a "Class Warrior, a Warrior for the middle class". Please

It's almost comical. So much for the "unifier".

Unemployment claims are down. It's the lead story on CNN.com

Foxnews.com has "Obamacare raised costs" as it's lead story.

Wow Chris. Seriously? Unemployment is staggering right now. Almost at unprecedented levels. And that's just who they're "counting" as unemployed. Despite of course the awesomeness of the Stimulus package. Let's do another one!

CNN is just as pro-Obama as Fox is anti-Obama. At some point you need to analyze things for yourself. Media is always biased these days. Come on man!

that is correct, because it doesn't count unemployed people.. its the people who are collecting unemployment benifits.

when you are on it long enough, you can no longer collect. my mom has been out of work for over 2 years. she is no longer claiming unemployment, but shes still unemployed!

Come on, Tom, give me a little credit. I thought the two opposing articles were pretty funny, which site deciding to use which as its lead story.

To its credit the CNN article is saying that the numbers might not mean anything in the long run and not to get too optimistic. But hey, any bit of good news is something to be hopeful about, que no?

I hope you're not taking my comments as defending our president, I never did such a thing. And IMHO Congress is way more divided than ever. Obama isn't unifying anyone.

Like I said before, can't wait to have a Republican president in the office again so everything will get fixed.

Its hard to debate right now when I essentially agree with you. I'm pretty ticked off at how things are going, but my ire isn't directed at the president or even at Bush. Its at all the jag-offs in the banking/mortgage industry who came up with those idiotic loans and the moronic homeowners who took those loans and who used their equity as an ATM.

Both Presidents were/are very aware of what was going on. Half of that nonsense was legislated in to effect. Everyone deserves a home! Shit Obama is trying to go down the same road AGAIN.

I think the plan now is just hands off, call the Republicans on stall tactics and partisan practices, appear to once again be the great unifier while simultaneously blaming the GOP for everything. And Bush sucks.
