Pretty interesting stuff

A lot of you will respect this... I'm doing some commissioning work at Edwards AFB in Ca for the rest of the week. I've been to quite a few military installations but this is a really cool one. It's about 2 hours north east of LA in the Mojave Desert. A bulk of the base is in a huge dried up lake bed. They test aircraft out here and later on in the day they were testing a new F35 fighter jet. I didn't get to see it do a short take off or vertical landing but they are definitely actively testing it. Also, they have several drone aircraft that they are actively taking off and landing. Hopefully the video gammer guy flying it is on his game because I'm sure it's a hefty bill if one of those things gets crashed. I've only heard the sonic boom once in my life and today I heard / felt it 6 times. Airplanes are cool... I want one.

This base has got to be the most spread out one I have ever been at. The area of land it covers is just absolutely amazing. Even though our government is in trouble it would be a shame to scrap advances in technology like this. NASA is out here to. I should have been an aerospace engineer or fighter pilot. Damn it!

You can pick up a MiG 21 for $30k-ish, will go supersonic...

Of course, it's about $16k for a fill-up and has a range of roughly 1,000 miles, so that's a pretty rough cost of ownership, just for gas, let alone maintenance on a 50 year old interceptor.

Nice dude.

I was an Aerospace Engineering major destined for the Air Force and pilot training at one point. Funny how things change so much based on one or two little things.

Nick since you work at AFB's a lot do you have a security clearance of any kind? Just wondering.

Nah, he just takes his SV and if the SP starts chasing him he runs.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Is picturing the Top Gun sequence. Grasshopper rides along the side of the runway on his SV as a drone takes off. It slows down to a crawl so he can keep up and both stay in the video frame

Cool stuff Nick. Sometimes the things you see at places like that are nearly sci-fi like.
