Rough winter forecasted for Chicago this year

Yes it is 75 out today but thought this was interesting
Get those snow blowers ready this season and stock up on salt, gonna be a rough one this year. (Not that we ever had a warm winter, LOL)

http://news.yahoo.com/accuweather-fo...bouchon=602,il

After it gets too cold to ride I don't mind it anyhow. Looking forward to trying out the new snow blower at work that I bought a few weeks ago.

That's not always true...the blizzard of '79 and its record snowfall occurred in an extremely cold winter.

I always think the same thing, especially when forecasters put out a long-range forecast.

The thing is that major environmental conditions are similar to last winter's, so the odds are in favor of similar weather. However forecasting what will happen months from now for a tiny plot of land like Chicago is impossible.

That's completely inaccurate. Cold and humidity don't have any relation to each other in the way you're describing it. In the winter the Jet shifts and we get a lot of cold air coming down from Canada. However, low pressure zones pull Gulf air up quite easily which causes all the snow. So it can be VERY cold and still we can get snow. Snow will be fluffier when its colder because when its warmer the water molecules don't fully crystallize, so they bond between the flakes as liquid.

Ever been to the Rockies? They are a lush range of mountains (relatively speaking) yet they get a @ss-ton of snow each winter.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

500 inches would only flatten things out here even more... so unless you like cross country skiing...
