Locomotive engineers to strike 07oct11

Might not want to plan to take a train to work on Friday. More than likely, we will be ordered back to work by Obama, but even a hiccup of rail service screws things up. I'm paid if I go to work or not, so it doesn't bother me at all.

My dad was an amtrak engineer for 40 years, seems like they'd strike every 10 years or so.

Then quit and find a job with great healthcare that doesn't increase in price. Yeah, I know, it does not exist. If you have not taken some sort of paycut yet, then consider this it and feel lucky about it.

My premiums and co-pays have gone up for 5 consecutive years and apparently I still have decent coverage compared to others.

Why would I quit my job? We are simply fighting for what we believe is right. UP made a profit of $775 million for the 4th quarter last year. Record profits. The railroads have the money. I'm only getting a 17% raise over 4 years. I'll fight for what I believe is right.

Yeah for strikes! I'm sure the businesses that depend on that service will be thrilled. Businesses that very likely aren't doing as well as your booming industry.

(my ins rates at the old job went up 4 fold in 2 years while we took 10% pay cuts simultaneously...and lost our 401k pay match retroactive a year.)

Only 17%?! Most places either had pay cuts/furlough days with stagnant wages and you're complaining about only getting a 17% raise?

I know several railroad workers and they all cry over worked and under payed yet make more than most blue collar.

Seems the American way.

We're all soft and under payed maybe we should all go on welfare????

As mentioned my dad did the rail road for a long time, it isn't exactly a cush job. My dad killed 10 people during his time, accidents, suicides, etc. He saw some of their faces rightbefore his train took their lifes, it's not an easy thing to deal with. Add in long constantly changing hours, especially if you haven't been there your whole life... There are better jobs.

Yes there are better jobs, that don't leave spouses and kids worried while you are working. And that let you work normal hours, indoors. Dave works hard for his pay, and we dpend on those benefits to survive. Our daughter has medical issues and take over $4,000 worth of medication a month, that she could bleed to death without. It's hard when our out of pocket goes up, and our co-pays go up, and the drug plan covers less and less. Because of Dave's odd hours I haven't been able to work, who would keep our daughter when we were both working? I'm looking for a job now, and hoping that I might have insurance that will cover what his doesn't. I know people sould say he should be greatful for his job, and he is, but at the same time they should be paid for the risk they take everytime they put on their workboots, and step into that railyard.

They tell you when you go for the engineer training that it's not if you hit somebody it's when you hit somebody, this is what to do.

17% over 4 years
4.25%/year

thats nice
I got a 3% raise last year, its the only raise Ive seen since starting with this company in 2007

Ive also seen 4 day work weeks for about 4 months this year (80% salary)
I dont work I dont get paid...

at the start of this year I also had my health insurance changed, it went from a BCBS plan with ppo/hmo options to a single hmo type plan with very restricted benefits, so much so that I went and bought my own health insurance to make sure I was protected should something happen

It's always funny to me when people bring this up. So any time a company makes money it should go right into the standard salary of its employees? That's just not how it works. It goes to expansion, new buildings, new facilities...new employees! And yes, into the owners' bank accounts and there's nothing wrong with that. Those are the people that take the risks and make the decisions that result in those profits.

Oh, and based on the 17% salary bump, I'd say that they are flushing that profit down to the employees already.

Ok but Jason, they don't hire when people are needed so the current employees are called during FEDERAL rest. The FRA requires them to have so many hours of down time. The company has installed computer callers to call them for jobs. The system glitches and calls when the conductors and engineers have federally required rest, and there are no humans to talk to, only a "robot caller". So they have cut spending on callers, and they are under staffed so they are saving money on payroll. And are making a crazy amount of money. The people that go in a work, under all weather conditions, and on holidays, weekends, and overtime shouldn't have benefits taken away to make the company even more money. I just don't get how they are asking too much for their families to be covered properly. They aren't asking for a ton of money, just to maintain their benefits. They have had out of pocket increases yearly without complaining. But now they are increasing premiums and decreasing benefits.

I get that as well, but why cut benefits that were in place when people were hired. And they are letting people go inplace of "robot callers". I'm not saying that pay should be based on profits, but if they are making that kind of profit there is no reason to cut benefits. And for the money going to improvements, they have had a window with a bullet hole in it forever and won't replace the glass, I could go on forever about the issues with the railroad. Unsafe work conditions, bad track, taking away safety days, and sick days. Etc. I understand that the raise is great but honestly they could have offered a 10% raise and kept benefits where they were.
