Best method to sell a vehicle?

I noticed that my bike on here is getting very little action, a little from Craigslist, had a little from ebay classifieds but itís still sitting in my garage. Iím hoping that this might be a resource for future sellers, but what method has gotten you the best response, or bang for your buck, when trying to sell a bike or a car? Like I said, Iíve been trying to list my bike on craigslist, but most of the time it will ask me to verify with a number though a text message (I assume due to the dollar amount). After I verify, it will create a link that it sends in an e-mail but it never comes up when doing a search to try to find the ad so that method is pretty much out. Ebay classifieds is good, but they only let you post 6 vehicles for free (or same vehicle 6 times) and then start charging $15 per post.

What do you find is the most effective method for selling different types of vehicles?

Track/race bike?
Cruiser?
Custom sport bike?
ATV?
Car?
Custom car?
Classic car?

I have always used craigslist with great results.

Price it for the season and it will move. CL or here, I got inquiries when selling my SV, but until I priced it to move, that is all they were.

edit: btw, that is a very nice looking bike you are trying to sell, but in my opinion, most people will not want to spend over $10K on a bike to sit in their garage or storage for 5 months.

Maybe try listing it on CL of some southern states where they ride year round.

Not sure about all the categories you listed, but some friends have had luck using sites like:

hd4sale.com,
harleyclassifieds.com, or
hdmotorcyclesforsale.com

Like Tom mentioned, you could also try HDForums.com

Your bike is pretty clean with low mileage & some upgrades. That puts it on the higher end of the price range for that yr/model. Given that & the time of year it probably won't move quickly unless you price it below market.

Season ,price , condition , location. I would say price is a big factor on a bike like yours. There are a lot of them out there , price it right.

If you're talking best price, you'll definitely have to wait for Spring. Most people shopping for bikes now know that it'll sit for 5-6 months, so they expect to pay a lower price.

If you're talking about quickest way to sell it, money talks, and a lower price will do that.

Personally, I think its the wrong time to sell, but perfect time to buy since its November. Its not until March that those roles will be reversed, and you can almost get exactly what you want once people are in a hurry to get one before the season starts.

I have had great success with regular ebay auctions no reserve starting at .99 cents. I have always brought in above market but I took tons of pictures and included video. The bike was detailed also.

If you want top dollar, do the above but wait for the first 65 degree day next spring then list.

Good suggestions, but the season to sell suggestion is kind of a blanket statement - it's pretty obvious it's not the best time to sell a bike but I'm looking bigger picture - more of what medium you use to get a vehicle sold. I've tried to list on CL but the ad hardly ever pops up when searching meaning there's a glitch in the system and people aren't seeing my ad. Same problem when I've listed cars before too so that method is pretty much out.

alocker - if that auction ends way below what you're wanting to spend on it, are you pretty much screwed at that point?

Like everyone else said you have to price it to move or else be very patient for the right buyer.

I sold a car on CL and it was on the site for only a couple of days. I priced it right at KBB, too.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

Yeah, it's really annoying too. I have a link in my e-mail that shows a website for the listing and I can click on it, but searching in CL gives me nothing. Everything seems to work fine for low dollar items, but the vehicles it doesn't seem to want to post. The weird thing is that some dealerships are able to spam post the hell out of their vehicles they are selling and CL won't even let me post mine once.

Something to consider.

13 year old bike
10,000 miles
Extra chrome/nice parts
$11,500

New Road King/RK Classic
Warranty
Zero Miles
Any Color you want
Stock
$16,999-20k pre tax.

If I'm going to buy a badass, expensive Harley (i.e. not a Sportster or a cheaper Big Twin like I'm selling on here), I'm going to spend the extra $5-10k, get a bike that's going to hold its value better, have more HP/Tq, bigger tires, any color I want, not have to deal with a possibly damaged bike, etc.

It's a beautiful bike and worth the price you're asking in a decent bike market, but this is not that market. As other people pointed out, it's not the right season either.

If I were you, I'd put the stock parts back on, or buy used OEM parts of ebay, swap them with your nice ones, lower the price according to what you can get for the nice parts.

Good luck with the sale!

One thing to remember is that the market is saturated with Harley Davidson Motorcycles right now. In addition to that, people don't have alot of disposable income right now. Those that do, probably don't have $10k+ laying around. That means that you are looking to attract buyers that are financing. The problem with this is that when people are buying with borrowed money, they will tend to be a little more flexible on price.

For example, well I can get his bike for $10500 which is $300ish a month or I can get this "newer, faster, better" version for $12000 which is only $35 a month more.

I regretfully am not in the market for a motorcycle right now, but I am always spending time on craigslist window shopping and I have come across your bike. So I don't think your searches are failing, I just think that your bike isn't drawing the attention due to the price, supply and demand due to the time of year.

When CL sends you the link, it doesn't mean it's live. They take a little while to get posted up.

And as everyone else said, a "fair" price isn't going to sell unless your bike is unique. This time of the year, people only want a deal. They see 100 bikes like yours and lowball the shit out of the sellers. Whoever caves the most sells their bike.

Or you could get a '99 Honda Shadow for $4000 that is more reliable and faster from a local dealer. You just can't wear the Harley bandana with it. Very little is selling right now regardless of anything you do. Unless you price that bike lower than anything else on the net it will sit until next year.

The point I was trying to make is this. A dealership has to make a profit, so they sold you the bike for more than you could have purchased it from a private party (probably 10~15% more) on top of that, you paid taxes (which I am certain you know you won't get back) and possibly some other fee's associated with buying it from a dealership.

In addition to that you bought it at the heart of motorcycle buying season. I understand if you don't want to give us a specific number, and truth be told, what you paid for it means little on what it will sell for.

Have you contacted any dealerships to see if they will take it on consignment? The dealership you bought it from liked it enough last time to put it on the showroom, maybe they would be willing to do it again.

One other thing that I noticed about your add vs. others, your title is VERY long. Have you tried a shorter title? Maybe the craigslist site has a character limit on titles.
