Any truth to this? 7 days in a hotel and tax is waived?

Someone told me before about this and finally I was able to stay at a hotel a solid week without jumping from town to town. But when I asked these hicks in Stockton Il looked at me like I was nuts. But for other reason I won't take there answer as the end all.

Any truth to the that?
If so please give me a link to read with what ever code it is.

I spent 27 years in hotels and never heard of anyone waiving tax.
I have however been able to negotiate my own pricing rather successfully.

I don't remember the code right now, but if you stay past a certain number of days it becomes similar to apartment rental so no tax. Search on the cit of chicago website, their ordinances are pretty easy to search. Start by looking at their Hotel tax ordinance.

It's a Chicago thing? No experience with hotels in Chicago or cook county really because it's home. But I've practically lived in hotels in many other states and never heard of such a think. Interesting to say the least.

Maybe it's a Chicago thing (highly unlikely for Chicago to not take their taxes though ), but I've pretty much lived in hotels all this year, and never got taxes waived due to prolonged stay (longest was 45 days). Some have waived it for it being military business, but that's different.

It's been over 10 years since I dealt with it, but I used to enforce these things. I am sure it is over 30 days, but whatever the threshold is, it should be similar anywhere. However , it is a while, so may not apply to your situation, but wanted to let you know you were not totally full of it.

Back in 1984 I stayed several months in a hotel in California. There it was 30 days, then no taxes.

YMMV

Hey Ken in the state of Illinois any person staying in a hotel over 30 consecutive nights is considered a resident and the taxes are exempt. Trust me I've been doin hotel maintenance 14 years. It is a state law thing though so Iowa might be different.

I stand corrected. If you stay in a hotel without the bill interrupted for 30 consecutive days the taxes are waived. I was told by a guy I work with that be careful to pay attention to the hotel staff to make sure they don't stop and restart the bill. That's how they try to slide out of it.

Hell I've never even see that. The best I get is per diem and occasionally free parking if I'm knocked up or the bellman doesn't notice my wedding ring.

Interesting.

It's odd that the hotel would try to milk you for the taxes if you were over the 30 mark, it's not like that money goes to them...
