He didn't break the record, Brian. He jumped from 71,000 ft and change. Kittinger holds the record at 102,800 ft (jumping 52 years ago)

This was a test of the capsule which will attempt a from from record-setting 120,000 ft.

Still very cool, nonetheless.

What I think is really awesome is that its a private company that's doing it... and not even an aerospace company.

I don't think they have enough logos on that space suit.

Where the fuck does Red Bull get the money to fund so many projects? Are they really seeing *that* much of a return on the advertising?

This is like watching paint dry, but much cooler - I am amazed at how he can go up that high and calculate where he will land - How does he not wind up in the middle of the Ocean off the coast of the Philippians?

I imagine there was a deafening roar when he landed, from those enormous brass balls knocking together!

Larry

When I was young, I dreamt of dying in battle while defending my country, my home or my honor against a horrible foe. After 20 years of riding a motorcycle on the street, I realize the statistical probability is that when I die, it will most likely be under the wheels be a fat woman in a mini-van who's just missed her exit.

Because you can control more times then not where you land if you have enough altitude and know how to fall. Especially under parachute, you can land on a dime if you got the experience.

Unless it is a old T-10 canopy where we didnt even have toggles until the MC1s came into play - those still sucked, we had to pull on the actual risers - Fuckin army!

Wonder how much technology went into creating a supersonic space suit.

Red Bull sells around 4.5 billion cans per year. I'm guessing their profit margin is pretty good on those as well.

Not much when you steal it from the AirForce.

I wouldn't say stole it, they had the same company that designed the above suit , design one for Red Bull and openly admit it on their website:

If their HQ looks like this, I think they're making good money:

Revenue 4.253 billion (2011)
Operating income 1.3 billion (2006)
Net income 650 million (2006)

That was the craziest and most suspenseful thing I have seen live on TV, watched it live yesterday. Tried to record it but recording was disabled on the DVR, wonder if it was intentional just in case something did not go right.
