is there anyway to track a cell phone to find a missing person?

My dad is getting old, well he disappeared. police just called after doing a wellness check requested by his ex wife.

Does anyone have access to cell phone tracking? I obviously have his number, but I dont remember what service he uses.

pretty much what was said already. Police have to request it from the cell company and then find out what cell towers his signal is between.
Best bet is to install a program on his phone (if he has a smart phone) where you can check it. Keep in mind that it wears the battery down and I am not sure if it works if the phone is dead.

use an Iphone or android and make sure the gps is on. you will get a better location with gps on.

the police can "ping" a phone, but there are a few steps that must be completed before company will comply

If he likes always carrying his keys with him, also look into getting some sort of attachment to place on the keys so he can be followed with that also

...plus my gf was with me saying "omg slow down, slow down" and I was thinking "Lose annoying squalk box in passenger seat, afford more mods and have less weight in the car and on the back of the bike"...so i dumped her and I'm single again as usual...HERE KITTY KITTY!!!

Glad he's ok T.... I agree with Chey. It's time to get him on your family plan and have the phone tracker on him. I know people that do this with there kids. I think it's like $10 a month through your carrier, but there may be other apps for it too.

I know I'm probably pissing into the wind here but for android you can use seekdroid. It's got some really nice features and is trackable from their website.

Wow, scary. Glad he is OK. What service does he have? Check with them, Sprint has stuff that allows me to check on my daughter and Ex without her knowing about it since I pay for the phones through work. Shhhhh....

Check out an app called Google Latitude, it works with your gmail address, so you'd have to get him one and set it up on his phone, install the app on both phones and then you can know where he is. Like you said you might have to update his phone

We used this the other night to catch up with some fellow riders, it was fun

I was going to suggest the same thing, or an Android phone; anything with the 'find me' apps like Google Latitude. Btu if he wanders off then relying on a working, charged, powered-on device with a good signal might not be a great solution. but it could be a first line of defense.

No time to do thorough research, but one of these types of options might be a little more reliable then a phone.
