Recommend a lawyer

Any lawyers on the board, specifically in the areas of labor/employment law? My wife and i are in need of consultation in handling her employer. Concerns of defamation, which he has done in the past, but most importantly protecting my wife from retaliation. Just want to make sure we know our rights and options

If nobody steps up for referal on here, you can always use the Chicago Bar Association, they'll refer you to somebody specializing in what you need http://www.chicagobar.org/am/templat...=need_a_lawyer

I don't know what your specifics are (but none of my business ), but, there are whistle-blower laws on the books that are supposed to protect employees from retaliation. However I think there's a wrinkle in Illinois, because it's considered a no-fault state, and an employee can be let go for any reason, or even for no reason at all. Sad to say in this state, it seems the employer gets the upper-hand while the employee gets screwed. So even if the employee thinks they've been terminated because of something specific, the employer can deny it, and get away with it.

Thats what we need to learn about, we need to know our rights before taking any action. I tried the chicago bar association link above but the nearest referral is in evergreen park and we're in oswego, so i'll have to do some more digging to find someone experienced in this area and closer to home

I don't have a lawyer for you but here is some good info...

http://www.state.il.us/agency/idol/laws/laws.htm

Had to deal with Anne's employee some time back. Thankfully, everything was resolved when he called us and started in with the threats. I got on the phone and told him to fire her. The risk of doing what he wanted her to do to save her job, was greater than the risk of losing her job. Fortunately, he never bothered us after that. Hope everything works out ok, tough situation to go through. Sorry Kevin.

I doubt it will need to go that far. She works for a small privately owned orthodontic practice, not a large corp. My thought is to share with him that we are proactively protecting ourselves, and that alone will prevent any unlawful action on his part. I'm not interested in actual legal action unless truly necessary, i'm more interested in limiting that possibility.
