I work with a guy that has the loudest bike I've ever heard. He wants to ride with me, but after a few miles my ears are ringing.

That's a bit of a cop out, my friend...It's too easy to blame just one segment of the riding community for the problem of excessive motorcycle noise. I certainly don't excuse the HD riders for their culpability here but there are certainly large groups of sportbike riders who install loud obnoxious pipes and annoy the public with their blipping and wringing out of their bikes. I live right off of Addison avenue and the stretch between Oak Park Avenue and Narragansett sounds like the front straight at Road America on Superbike weekend on almost any Summer night with it also sounding like a bunch of twins rushing for the first turn at Springfield thrown in for good measure. Even with the stop sign that was put in between Oak Park and Narragansett the noise is annoying...even for me and I LOVE the sound of racing engines at full song!
It's a complicated issue that affects motorcycling very negatively. The AMA has been working hard for many years to try and change the mindset of riders and get the manufactureres of aftermarket exhausts to address the problem. It's going to take a change of attitude and it's going to have to start with us...the riders. We need to apply peer pressure. Recently when I have invited people to ride with me, if someone shows up with exceptionally loud pipes ...they get uninvited. I have eliminated some from my list of invitees. I have a couple friends who are angry with me but a couple others got the message and put baffles in their straight, drag, TT and shotgun pipes.

"Loud pipes risk rights"

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

If you want to anger a conservative, tell him a lie. To anger a liberal all one must do is tell the truth!
