Highland House torn down

Wife just saw it being torn down today. Can't believe it's been almost 10 yrs since it closed.

Edit - she just noticed it gone today, but drove by yesterday also. She's been going to HP hospital weekly for appts for our soon to be expected twins. In other words, if it wasn't today, it was VERY recent.

It was always fun going there on Sundays to check out all the bikes.

Check out those gas prices!!!

Trips up to HH from the city were always memorable. Trips from HH to everywhere else were even more so.

Might have never moved from cruisers to sportbikes if my boss hadn't let me ride his SV through the ravines on the way up one time. (I bought the bike from him a week later and the rest was history)

A piece of Chicago Motorcycle folklore just died. I remember going there in the mid to late 90s and having a great time. I kinda don't like Full Moon, the food sucks and just dosent have the same feel.

I loved going there, but as a service manager, I was always trying to dodge those goofs who were like 'hey man, can you come take a look at my bike? its making a . . . ." and I'd be like 'Its SUNDAY, FFS! bring it to the shop and pay us to fix your shit'

But yeah, rides AFTER were always pretty memorable too. The food was okay too, nothing to write home about, but that's not why really went there anyhow.

Thanks for posting this. Lots of great memories there!

- the first day I met you up there you told me that story.

I miss that place too. I don't like the full moon either, but the food and service sucked at HH anyway. But that's not why I went there.

"Hal's" use to have pre-cooked and wrapped Egg & Bacon sandwiches in aluminum foil for like $1 and coffee was .75 - Many a hangover was cured with that combo............and about (3) vicodens

That was the spot the old Players Crew use to race to every Sunday - 8 Ducs and my lil SV PINNED up the Edens at 7am as last one in the lot had to buy the Sammy's and joe

the owners wanted to retire but no one wanted to buy it and keep it as a restaurant. so ernie semersky bought it(porsche, audi, saab exchange) and tried to make it a used car lot but HP wouldn't let him. who knows whats going to replace it.

Man, I'm feeling older by the minute.

Wow!!! There's actually someone else on here old enough to remember it as "Hal's"!?!?

Maybe I'm jaded by too many years as a Teamster but, I think the food at Full moon is actually better (but not by much)...besides...Full Moon has Grits...the folks that ran the Highland house didn't even know what Grits are!

Then there was that one old waitress at HH...She was dubbed the "Waitress from hell!"...Some guys would get seated in her section and would get up & leave and go across the street for McDee's!
I've missed it since it closed...I'm gonna miss it even more now!

Ahhh the old days...When Gilmer Road only had 2 stop signs between IL. Route 22 and US 12 !... I Used to bend into that soft curve by the white barn flat out in 5th on my hopped up SR 500...what a thrill!.

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

If you want to anger a conservative, tell him a lie. To anger a liberal all one must do is tell the truth!

So many great memories of that place. Went by it today and its completely gone. I'm up in that area often bicycle riding. I thought I was the only one that remembered it as Hals. I'm pretty sure it was a used car lot for a very short period of time.

The full moon doesn't have the same feel but its not too bad. I still make my way up there a couple of times a year.

We need more pics.

So tell us more.

Hey did anyone notice the price of gas in the one picture? We probably thought that was expensive too. Boy do times change.

Oh and if anyone of you are the owner of the Pacific Coast that everyone was making fun of that one day.... Uh sorry.

But really.. A Pacific Coast? In that yellow cream color?
