Curiosity's Seven Minutes of Terror

The Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) is only a few hundred thousand miles from Mars and the new rover Curiosity will landing safely tomorrow, assuming that ALL of this goes as planned:

http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/video/index.cfm?id=1090

They are using a much different process than Spirit and Opportunity did (which was basically slamming into the surface inside a beach ball after deceleration).

Watch that video I posted and tell me that was not an engineering feat of brilliance tp pull something like this off. A heard it quoted that the over success rate of entry was ~30%. Not very good odds.

First couple images from Curiosity:

I really wish I would have stayed up to watch the landing live, but I fell asleep damn it. This is a huge feat of engineering and it makes me sad that so many people don't appreciate the amount of time/effort/passion/genius people put into this. Just look at how happy this guy is that Curiosity landed safely:

I think that is pretty damn cool, but it would be even cooler if they sent a person up there. I am sure there would be plenty of volunteers.

Oh I stayed up to watch If we were about to meet our overlords I wanted to see it live!

The crew looked really young for some of those guys. Not sure if lack of sex/women helps you keep a baby face. But I expected a lot of older guys in control.

Out of curiosity in college I took a bet to make out with a fat chick in a bar. For years I referred to this instance as Curiosity's Seven Minutes of Terror.

/not a true story
//would be a cool story bro if it was

OK, these little details are just cool. Look at the holes in the rover's wheel:

Then compare the the holes with Morse Code:

The wheels leaves 'J' 'P' 'L' (for Jet Propulsion Laboratory) in Morse Code in the dirt.

LOL, that's pretty cool. Too bad the wind will erase the tracks in a month or so.
