CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A motorcyclist died Thursday morning after he struck the back of a car on the Dan Ryan Expressway (I-90/94), state police said.

The crash happened about 5:15 a.m. in the northbound local lanes of the Dan Ryan Expressway near West 35th Street, according to an Illinois State Police District Chicago trooper.

The motorcycle was traveling at a high rate of speed when it struck the rear of a silver 2002 four-door Cadillac, the trooper said.

The motorcyclist was dead on the scene, state police said.

The driver of the Cadillac was not injured.

Emergency crews remained on the scene and all local lanes of the northbound Dan Ryan were closed as of 6 a.m., state police said.

There was no indication that drugs or alcohol were a factor in the crash.

Sad to hear. This is an update from the Trib with more info and the rider's name.

A motorcyclist was killed this morning when he collided with a car on the inbound Dan Ryan Expressway, causing a massive traffic back-up, authorities said.
The collision occurred in the local lanes of the expressway just north of 39th Street at about 5:15 a.m., said Illinois State police Master Sgt. Joseph Stangl.
Authorities were still gathering details on how the crash occurred, officials said.
The motorcyclist, Sylvester D. Dickson, 43, of Chicago, was dead at the scene, he added. None of the four people inside of the car were injured, according to state police. The name of the victim was not released.
Alonzo M. Cozart, 16, of Chicago, was driving a Cadillac which was carrying three other four passengers when it collided with the motorcycle. No injuries for the people in the car was reported.
Preliminary information indicated that the 1996 Yamaha motorcycle traveling northbound on I-94 near 39th Street when it rear-ended a 2002 Cadillac DeVille as the Cadillac slowed down in an attempt to change lanes, police said.
Cozart was ticketed for driving without insurance, driving without a license and driving too slow.

Sad to hear.

I'd be curious to know if the biker was wearing a helmet (not that it matters now I guess).

It seems the Ryan is notorious for having the most accidents than any other around here, regardless of the type of vehicle.

A safe bet is if it wasn't noted in news reports that the rider was not wearing a helmet it usually indicates that he was. The media is a STRONG advocate of helmet laws and usually never misses a chance to report that a rider was not wearing a helmet when reporting a motorcycle fatality. But, if the victim was wearing a helmet, helmets are usually not mentioed at all in the report.

So, it was an UN-licensed, UN-insured, Piece Of Shit! That makes sense. I wonder if their brake lights or turn signals even worked? :

this was exactly what i was thinking when i read the article. amazing that jacknuts can even have a car without license and insurance. they'll just be on the street again.

i'm sure something else was going on. who 'slows down to change lanes' on a highway?

16 year old driver with no license and no insurance. driving a cadillac.

sorry if i'm profiling here, but that's bullshit that he gets a ticket or two.

RIP to the rider and his family.

ride safe guys.

Now that more information is coming out it might not be so clear cut who is at fault. I bet the brake lights and turn signals worked or else the driver would have been ticketed for that too.

However, sounds like the idiot teenager slammed on his brakes to change lanes because he wanted to take an exit ramp and the rider hit the car. I bet if it were a car behind the Caddy it would have hit it too.

(pure speculation, but it is possible)

From the amount of the damage to the rear of the car in the news photos, either the car was completely stopped on the highway or the bike was traveling at very high speed. Or both. Either way, I never like to hear about a rider losing their life. Another reminder of how quickly things can go south on you.

I see it happen here in AZ a frightening amount. And whenever I see it, it's a Mexican. They have shit for brains and are oblivious to anyone and anything other than themselves. I'm not talkin about Mexican-Americans either. I'm talking about the uneducated fuckers who jumped the fence and have no business being on our roads. Once time Mexican guy "A" sees Mexican guy "B" broke down on the side of the highway (they must have known eachother) and, I kid you not, he fucking slows down to a near stop, hangs a right, and crosses 2 lanes of traffic to get to the shoulder while people are bearing down on him at 65+MPH. (I was one of them!) I COULD NOT BELIEVE MY EYES! Stupid mother fucker! On a 6-lane highway!!!

RIP to this rider. Lawmakers need to impose more serious penalties upon degenerates like this who take the lives of others because of their stupidity!!!

I passed this on my way to work while they were photographing the body; no helmet, from the brief glance I got.

And I don't want to sound cold, but every day on my commute I see four or five guys (I see them day in and day out, and being a rider note them and their bikes) who absolutely FLY through traffic, generally not even 'splitting' lanes but simply riding wherever they please, as if the cars were simply obstacles. These idiots cause near-misses continually as they cut off cars, whip across lanes and scare the pants of people. I don't know if the deceased was one of those folks, and don't want to impugn anyone without solid info, but I have to say I'm amazed this isn't more common.

I ride-I get it, we can go where cars can't. But having someone pass within a foot of my car on the yellow, doing 75-80 when I'm at 50 in traffic, is mind-boggling to me each and every time it happens.

I'd imagine if he had a helmet on, they might have taken it off in an effort to try to revive him. Perhaps by the time you saw it, it was already attempted and too late.

Could be, for sure.

Looking at the bike, I could *almost* be sure it was one I recognized from other mornings, and that fellow always had a helmet locked to the back. Not positive, though, and a tragedy regardless.

When I was an LEO, I was at a couple HORRIFIC motorcycle accidents, including one where an inebriated rider didn't see a roll off dumpster on a dark side street, and managed to run into the hoisting bar with his face; his passenger (his wife) was saved by the half of his head that got shot back at her, knocking her from the bike and out of the path of the bar.

Try and MAKE me ride without gear at this point ....

Gear is irrelevant at this point. I never rode without a helmet but if I was rolling along at the same speed as every other car on the expressway and some asshole slammed on his brakes and swerved across 2 lanes to make an exit I could be wearing a suit of armor and still be killed. Did you see the photos? The bike destroyed the rear end of a caddy!

The driver should be ticketed with reckless driving and brought up on manslaughter charges. So he missed his exit, guess what, "take the next fucking exit then asshole". and stop driving illegally. He should be in jail right now. Period.

Did you see the photos? The bike destroyed the rear end of a caddy!

The driver should be ticketed with reckless driving and brought up on manslaughter charges. So he missed his exit, guess what, "take the next fucking exit then asshole". and stop driving illegally. He should be in jail right now. Period.
I didn't see the photos; I saw the body.

The dynamics of a motorcycle crash NEVER make gear irrelevant, since we leave the bike so easily. I have a buddy who had a car turn out in front of him (classic 'left turn without seeing bike' scenario) and he nearly put his Harley THROUGH the car, while he (yep, geared up) flew over the roof and 'just' got banged up pretty good.

More than anything else, the lack of gear speaks to mindset, I think. People who don't gear up tend to ride like they're invincible, in my experience, while those who do ride defensively understand they're the lightest, least well-protected clown in the circus.

I don't want to sound like I'm blaming the guy who got killed; I do not know the circumstances. Just observing that many, many people I see riding in the morning commute on the Ryan act like they they're immune to the laws, both of the road and of physics.
