Where can my kid go to get formal graphic design courses?

Anything local for youngins? Or is everything through a local college where you have to be a certain age?

dunno about local classes for kids, but I'd recommend www.lynda.com offers excellent online video training.

The Adobe series of 'Classroom in a Book' is another excellent resource.

Adobe offers Training through their partners: http://training.adobe.com/partner-finder.html#p=1 So, this is an option as well (but very $$$, especially if travel is involved)

Of the Adobe partners, I have had good experience with New Horizons:

I forget how old she is, but when I was in high school there was a program where since I had more than enough credits to graduate, I spent half a day at a local college taking classes. I'm not sure if anything like that exists anymore.

See if any of your local tech, community, or art schools have continuing ed or community outreach classes. I don't know if there's an age limit, but if there is, if she's smart and has some aptitude for graphic design, you might be able to talk them into letting her in.

Is she interested in learning how the software works? Or does she already know that and is more interested in learning theory? There's both the technical aspect of being able to produce work that she can get from watching tutorial videos, but the theoretical part and fostering creativity is just as important. Check out if there are any lectures that look not too boring available at art museums or take her to a gallery night.

She's 11. No she has no specific training at all, just an interest in computers and might like to be creative with Photoshop or graphic design. Any class at all would be good starting from the basics to advanced stuff later on. I think she might like it. I'll check all that stuff out soon. Thanks.

Check out local community centers, they typically offer many classes at reasonable costs. The offerings are typically limited to the instructors available, but check around, might get lucky and will find something that will fit her interests.

Yep, community centers, and libraries might be good to check out too.

Does the local high school offer any of these types of classes? The teachers might be good resources.

I learned through college courses, but I did hear that those Lynda classes are great!

I love graphic design, if she is creative she will have a blast!

This is a summer camp, but might be worth checking out?
http://www.internaldrive.com/

I've never heard of them before and have no idea if it's any good or a heap of crap, but who knows? They have courses at a few places around Chi.

Damn. I wish I had access to stuff like that when I was a kid. I did get lucky and the drafting teacher in high school had the foresight to install some of that newfangled desktop publishing software on some of the CAD machines and pushed me into doing that instead of becoming an engineer. (I suck at math. lol)

If she can wait a few years there's always the Army. My first job was computer graphics, I worked in a Psy-Ops unit and we made the pamphlets dropped on the enemy telling them how to surrender.

+1 This. As an example, I know the Fox Valley Park District offers a lot of community classes and stuff. Perhaps something similar is available in your area?

Posting a cage implies that he suggests Ken buys some sort of restraint/protection to keep his daughter "safe" from the dangers of high school. What do high school boys think about? Sex. That's an accepted norm.

A Faraday cage protects electronic components from electric radiation and such.

Hybrid of the guy's implied post: "electric charged penises"

I'm really disappointed that I had to explain that to you, Rick. Now go back to building your bench while grunting and scratching your nuts. Hey, maybe you should invest in a Faraday cage to protect your child from electric charged pussies.
