Local Input/Northern Suburbs

Hi Everyone! I'm not sure if this is the appropriate section for this but...I'm looking for your input and guidance on places to live north/northwest of Chicago.

I'm getting ready to move to the area middle of next month and will be working in the Deerfield area. As such, I'll be looking for housing in that area, actually probably farther out close to where ever I can board my horse (haven't figured that out yet).

I spent a couple weeks there earlier this year and drove around a little bit. I made it as far northwest as Chain o' Lakes, which is as far out as I'd want to go. I have two dogs and enjoy open spaces, so a city type apartment won't work for me. I want to rent a house and really value a nice outdoor setting, perhaps near water or forest, walking trails, etc. I'm not looking for specific recommendations though, just general information on good towns/locations.

Any information you all can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance.

I have spent my whole life in the northern suburbs. My wife share boards a horse and there are a lot of stables in the area. What kind of horse riding do you do? Maybe my wife can recommend a stables. Regarding houses, there are a lot of areas that can give you what you want. The further you get from Deerfield, the worse the traffic can get. Also, pricing can vary a lot. Feel free to shoot me a PM and I will be happy to talk with you about the area.

Take care and ride safe,
Brian

Thanks for all the input. So are all the towns listed so far generally low-crime?

And yeah, that's a lot of Barringtons!

No traffic out that way 30 mins tops to deerfield easy. 294 never has traffic that far north and the back roads are fast and nice to.

When i was in wheeling i would travel to north chicago 20 min drive and that was driving normal

We are looking at the barringtons. Pricin is down some but the hills (and other northern ones I believe) have a min lot size of 5 acres and the taxes are atrocious ($30,000 a year seems to be average). I'd say great schools but many of them don't even go to Barrington schools - not sure how good Algonquin schools are.

Algonquin has decent schools. Barrington may be expensive but its a decent place to live.

I'm right between Fox Lake and Antioch and work all around Deerfield, not really much traffic. Crime rate is pretty low too, higher in Fox Lake though.

Thanks everyone! Great input here and I appreciate it! It's tough moving without really knowing much about where you're going. Lol.

I made a list of all the recommended places and will focus my search there. Where I find a barn for my horse will also play a role in determining where I end up. I want to be close to her.

I wouldn't even look at a place unless it was at least 5 acres in Barrington with some horse stables and maybe a 15K square foot house with living quarters for the help. Why settle for less? YOLO

Whenever someone says, "oh you're from Barrington, you must be a rich asshole" I can assure you they are speaking of Barrington Hills or South Barrington, the places of fairy tales. The rest of the Barringtons are fairly normal, and most of them attend Barrington HS, which is a great school if you keep your kids off the blow. Lot's of places to store a horse in that area, but the horses need to be winterized with sea foam first and put on a battery tender.

I commuted Lake Barrington to Deerfield for a while and it was pretty easy. I never even got on a highway; backroads the whole way. Maybe 45 min at a busy time of day.
As long as you aren't in Port Barrington, you will likely be in Barrington schools which are really excellent. I say that having gone to them, and now that I'm a parent and not living in that district, I really regret not living in-district.

You will find lot of places to board a horse nearby if you are living in Barrington.

Prices are down now and it's worth a look. My parents' house is on the market and I swear if my hubs could find work up there, we'd buy it in a heartbeat. I sort of hated it as a teenager because it was remote, but as an adult, I would kill for that sort of quiet and privacy.

Haha! It's a good thing you posted, I didn't realize horses had to be winterized too!

No kids, so schools aren't a concern but it is nice to know which Barrington I should focus on.
