This is not about reducing the amount of guns or violence...It's about putting gun shops and ranges etc. out of business. Putting cash in the county coffers is only a bonus. The Dems of Cook County have been trying to come up with a way to put all gun related business out of the area and may have come up with a way! Who's going to buy guns or ammo in this county when you can save by going into a close by collar county?

So wait, they say that 1/3 of the gun related violence is from guns purchased in the suburbs, but they are going to tax the shit out of people in the city which will drive gun owners (both law abiding and criminals) to the suburbs to purchase guns and ammo.

I would also like to point out to the idiots running the city of Chicago, there is something called:

And on this invention called the internet, we can buy:

Not only without a cook county tax, but without sales tax either!

This would make the tax on a box of .22s far more than the cost of the ammunition itself.

The most shocking part of the article is at the end where they refer to Toni Preckwinkle as "she". That's a woman!?

All handguns should be free, and handed out to every citizen of the United States, because the 2nd amendment guarantees our right to bear arms. But, bullets should cost $10,000 each. So if you wanna bust a cap in someone's ass, it will have to be for a VERY good reason.

Yea, that makes sense, right?

When will they realize the guns aren't the problems, it's the city that allows a culture of uneducated street gangs to rule the streets almost unchecked.

Chris's way is one way of looking at this. Providing shooting lessons in junior high or grammar school could be another approach. Seems people are mostly upset that innocent bystanders are shot. Gangbangers with skill could exterminate themselves and everyone could live happily ever after.

So they're pretty much trying to cash in on the much-publicized "spree" of shootings this summer and make up for their extreme budget deficit.

I like how the city keeps carping about how the suburbs are providing a source of weapons and ammo to the city residents, without every addressing the elephant in the room:

Then where's all the violence in those suburbs? If they're an easy source of guns and ammo, why aren't they dripping in the blood of innocents?

Seriously, how can they say that at a press conference or interview without someone slapping themselves in the forehead and going, "Hey...."?

Sounds like he is on point.

I don't know why people are so scared of guns. Anyone could easily break into your house and ax your face apart if they really wanted.

People need to stop with this bullshit and legalize rights to carry so the good guys can fight back.

This is all of Cook County, not just Chicago.

And its stupid. Law abiding gun owners aren't the problem, and attacking their access to legal weapons/ammo isn't going to solve any crime problems.

Yes, she's female. And she is President of the Cook County Board of Commissioners. The People of Cook County elected her about a year ago. So this would be a County wide tax, not just in the City.

She's been on the news a lot since we got rid of that Stroger kid. You don't pay too much attention to the local government around here, do you? Shame, cause they will mess up your life far more than the Feds will.

I feel bad for the cook county suburbs that are the only ones actually affected by the tax, since you can't purchase ammo anywhere in the city, can't even have it delivered

Illinois: Cook County Proposal Would Force Law-abiding Citizens to Pay “Violence Tax” on Legal Purchases of Guns and Ammunition

Cook County Board President and Commissioners need to hear from you TODAY!

Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle recently announced plans to penalize, through taxation, the sale of guns and ammunition sold in the City of Chicago and its suburbs. This penalty is set to be proposed to the Cook County Board of Commissioners next week. Proposals such as this are frequently sold to the public as a way to reduce crime and increase tax revenue. However, this is nothing more than a politically motivated stunt to impose a punitive tax on a targeted group of law-abiding citizens who seek to exercise a constitutionally guaranteed right. This proposed plan would subject purchases of any firearm or ammunition to an additional tax above and beyond the rate at which other goods and services in this area are taxed. There is no evidence to suggest those who would pay this tax are misusing firearms and causing violence in Cook County. This penalty would only negatively affect law-abiding gun owners, and in this time of economic trouble would severely harm legitimate business owners inside Cook County as people look to avoid the penalties by purchasing guns and ammunition elsewhere.

Law-abiding gun owners in Cook County are already subjected to inequitable measures restricting their Second Amendment rights. And now, with this so-called “violence tax,” a highly specific subset of Illinois citizens will be forced to foot the bill for the actions of violent Chicago gang members and criminals. These sorts of measures constitute an attack on the wallets of those law-abiding citizens who are not the cause of this problem, while failing to address the real causes of Chicago’s escalating levels of violence.

There is no evidence to suggest that targeting law-abiding gun owners will solve Cook County’s crime problems. In fact, the evidence points to the just the opposite, as a link exists between less restrictive firearm laws and lower crime rates — especially violent crime. The percentage of the United States population in states that champion Second Amendment rights has increased, while the murder rate in this country has decreased dramatically - falling by more than half since 1991. If Cook County were to adopt laws that target criminals instead of law-abiding citizens, the area may soon see a similar decrease in crime.

The intent and consequence of this measures will be to drive up the price of guns and ammunition, thereby burdening law-abiding gun owners and impeding their fundamental right to self-defense. The 2013 spending plan that will contain this tax is set to be announced next week. Please contact Board President Preckwinkle and the Cook County Board of Commissioners TODAY and demand that they halt their attacks on the Second Amendment. Their contact information can be found below:
