$20,000 Bonus??

God... I work for the wrong damn company! We don't even get a x-mas party this year. But they said... IF, we work EVEN HARDER next year, we will get one next December. YIP... F*CKEN YAHHH.
__________________________________________________ __

PITTSFIELD, Maine - Workers at a shoe plant were feeling more than a little tickled when they got their Christmas bonuses that, for some, totaled nearly $20,000.

Instead of receiving typical end-of-year frozen turkeys, the 200 employees of the SAS Shoemakers plant here were handed envelopes when they were called together Friday afternoon.

When Lawrence Wyman opened his, he found a check for $19,000. His wife, Charlene, got a check for the same amount.

The company this year awarded its employees with bonuses of $1,000 for every year worked at the company. Even those who had worked less than a year got $500 each.

The bonuses were particularly uplifting given that most news in the manufacturing sector this year has been about plants closing and employees being laid off.

"They called us all together and said we would each get $1,000," Lawrence Wyman said. "Everyone started clapping and then they said it would be $1,000 for each year worked."

And that's when the tears flowed. Some estimated that the bonuses totaled $200,000 or more.

SAS Pittsfield is a division of SAS Shoemakers in San Antonio. The corporate offices were closed Friday afternoon and company officials could not be reached for comment.

We had a swanky Christmas party on Friday. At the Chicago Hyatt. Great food and an open bar. I wonder what kind of bonuses will be given out....

The company I work for is owned by a company in bankruptcy.

Our bonus is that we didn't get another salary cut. Merry Christmas.

Today, I received a CHECK for 0.00. I think it was a mistake. I work for a friggen bank, I'm just thinking how much it cost them to print and distribute a check for $0.00.

Last year my boss handed out our bonuses at the xmas party. It is customary to hand them out individually and say a little something nice about each person. My boss said, "Alison did great this year and the only thing she really wants for christmas is a significant other. If you know anyone, her only requirement is that he has a full set of teeth."

I don't know why he said it, but I just about hid under the table when he did.

Enron gave out a lot more than 20k bonuses in most cases. It depends what industry your in. One of my bosses got a $700 signing bonus and is getting a $3,000,000 bonus at year end.

$20,000 is an ok bonus in my company, but I would guess the average is more around $50,000

I think a good way to measure a bonus it is how it compares to your salary, and that of course depends on if the bonus is tied to your salary at all(meaning a bonus counts as part of your salary when you come into the company, or you get paid based on performace... that to me is not a bonus but just part of your compensation)

I have companies that gave me bonuse based on percentages... like 10% of my salary would be my bonus... and that was not bad. Now a 3mil bonus is defenetly excellent.

Yeah....he is our CEO. I always like to think of bonuses as percentage of salary too. However, you should never count on any bonus. The last three years in this industry (investment management) have been bad. We always get something like 15-20% of our salary, but a good year could get us anywhere from 50-100%. That would make me happy and there is a good possibility for it this year, but I'm not counting on a dime.

Yea, that is always a good measure, don't count on anything... that way it is a BONUS if you receive one.

I gotta say though......not counting on it is one thing but needing it is completely another. We've had so much financial bad luck in the last couple of years that I don't even think I'd spend a $20 bonus if we got it. I'd pay down some debt to cushion blows of any future blows we might have to take. It would be sooooooooooo easy to go out and buy a new bike or car, but I think after the last 3 years of my company going down the tubes, threatening layoffs, cutting profit sharing, bonuses, etc. I gotta practice some financial discipline.

I work for a company that rolls in millions per year with less than 100 employees. For administering the network and servers, and for designing several new programs and features I got a whopping $25...which was like $20 after taxes. As the check was being handed to me I was also given a brand new...never before seen...swift kick in the nuts.

What do you do Meggy? Some jobs don't really give bonuses. Jobs which performance brings in capital are more bonus oriented. Like when my companies investments do well it brings in more investors so they give us big bonuses. Usually jobs like IT IS jobs don't visibly bring in new capital, although they do save money. So you wouldn't see big bonuses in that area unless your working for a Financial institution or something. Personally I'd give up the bonus if they gave me the money in salary. That way it's garanteed.
