Key West - Need Recommendations!

Going down to Key West for a quick 4 day vacation, later in February. Never been down there but know many of you have.

Would love to hear any fun things to do, awesome restaurants, etc... please share!

We're coming in via Ft. Lauderdale & driving down, so any good food recommendations for something in between (Miami, Key Largo, etc.) would also be greatly appreciated!

Nothing to see on that drive but mangroves and never-ending land bridges.

Take a jetski tour that goes through the flats as well as out into the ocean. You can also get pretty close to the island where the SEALS train - which you might enjoy. Charter a fishing trip if that's your thing. Just know that tarpin and bonefish are next to impossible to catch so bring beer and sunscreen.

Resist the urge to go to the clothing optional bars, or the clothing optional floors in the normal bars. They are not - ever - what you would hope for them to be. Ever. There are still images that haunt me to this day.

The girls in the strip clubs are nice enough. ...and the strip clubs are air conditioned - which is also nice.

That said - the island gets pretty small pretty fast - and you can see whatever you came to see in a very short time. I could take it or leave it personally. YMMV

Jimmy Buffet has a restaurant there. I'm sure a parrot head as you are already knows that. They have a huge gift shop as well. Ripley's believe it or not is pretty cool too, and the people watching is awesome.

Key Lime Martini!

There is nothing firm, nothing balanced, nothing durable in all the universe. Nothing remains in its original state, each day, each hour, each moment, there is change. Change is the essence of life. Embrace change as you do life. To fight change is to live in the past.

Take one of the trolleys around the island, it will give you a good overview and you can hop on and off the trolley at various destinations.

Food:
Louie’s Backyard
El Meson De Pepe’s
Blue Heaven

Places to checkout:
Shipwreck museum
Truman Little White House
Hemingway Home and Museum
Mallory Square for sunset and people watching
Butterfly House/Museum

Do a little each day and then find a window seat at any of the bars on Duval street, have a drink, a smoke, listen to music and do some people watching.

If your lucky, you'll catch a cock fight.

Snorkeling is always good there. The main shopping strip, beaches galore, and the best bar option.

Life has no instruction manual. Parts and labor can be impossible to find. Many go down the road with parts that are in need of service. A breakdown is eventual.

Telling you - I'm pretty a open minded functioning alcoholic that is quite content to live and let live. This whole hot tub petri dish at the GoE on the other hand was something else altogether.

It was like a Thanksgiving dinner with all the relatives you only acknowledge once a year and the rest of the time you pretend not to know them, but they are naked...in a hot tub...and it's as bad as you can possibly imagine.

I've been to Key West 7 or 8 times in the last 5 years. PM me what type of trip you're looking for. I've stayed at probably half of the B&B's and a few of the big Hyatts. We used to do a party trip with 30+ people every spring/fall. And I'd pass on the snorkeling there.... The reefs around key west really suck compared to further up the keys (Key Largo is good). The jet ski trip is fun though! I've dived all over the keys, and don't bother bringing any gear for key west trips anymore. It's a lot of dead coral.

Key West doesn't have natural beaches, it's pretty much a drinking destination. Duval is good (tourist trap) we liked to get off the main strip: Dantes, schooner wharf, finnegans wake, etc. it all depends what you're looking for. For breakfast definitely hit Blue Heaven (there will probably be a wait). Pepe's is really good too. Hope you're a laid back dude... hahaha

Key West Cigar Club on Duval Street, awesome guys there and they've got Drew Estate Lig Privada T-52's that you can enjoy while sitting on leather couches or while sitting in barbers chairs and admiring the scenery as it walks by.

What happens in Key West stays in Key West. Like I said, for awhile we were pretty much considered locals with the performers/bar staff. To the point where they knew when we were coming down (same time every year), etc etc. Even partied at a few of their houses late night.

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Going down there with the wife & she's not a hard drinker (I can't drink at all). Definitely interested in snorkeling, good food, playing tourist, and simply just chilling out. Staying at Knowles House B&B for reference.

If you like sea food (I hope so, it's the only good food in Florida) Be sure to hit Conch Republic by the pier for happy hour (1-4 I believe), and Half Shell. Mallory Square for sunset and to watch the street performers is a fun touristy thing to do. I'd look into doing a trip to the dry tortugas (might include snorkeling?) over just a snorkeling trip. Check out the dry tortugas national park and fort jefferson. Sounds like a lame trip to me lol..
