Network Question

Ok system people. I am try to setup a peer-to-peer network with a win 95 box and a win me box. I can not see the Me box or network. I go to Network Neighborhood and I don't even see the 95 box.

I'm using tcp/ip to net the two boxes. The owner told that network was working. When I go to the Me box I can see the 95 box but I can not see the shared folders. I have followed the Microsoft doc on peer to peer, but it does not work.

Any Ideas? By the way I check the cat5 cables, nic cards and hub all work

Check to see if net bios over tcp/ip is turned on. Make sure that both machines are in the same workgroup. Last double check to see if file and print sharing is turned on, on both pc's

Switch to Windows XP. It'll set up the network for ya.

I've had problems with different Windows OS's recognizing each other, but when I went to XP the boxes talked to each other fine.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

File & print sharing (on)
Machines in the same work group
Have to check net bios though.

Look in the properties for the network card on the win me box. In the advanced tab it may have the "firewall" option checked. But I'm not sure if it's there in winme at all, so don't quote me.

I would troubleshoot it like this:
verify connectivity:

start/run/command
at the command prompt and type in ipconfig /all on both boxes.
get ip address information of of each box then
ping the address of the other machine.
you should get something that looks like

C:\>ping 192.168.1.102

Pinging 192.168.1.102 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.102: bytes=32 time<10ms TTL=64

also make sure that the netmask and default router/gateway is the same on both machines.

at this point you know that you can communicate via ip address
next you can try and ping the other machine by name
you should get the same type of results as above.. if that is not working then you have to figure out how to resolve the name..
you can do this via netbios or possibly a couple of entries in the hosts file
