HDTony.... Damn glad to meet you!

Government's view of the economy could be summed up in a few short phrases: If it moves, tax it. If it keeps moving, regulate it. And if it stops moving, subsidize it.

I gotta tell you. When the probe sent back its first images, I was struck with a feeling of sorrow...sorrow for that poor planet which will be savaged in the next century. That planet has been untouched for millions of years, and now will succumb to the greed and aggressions of mankind.

I got over it pretty quick and started thinking what have the great thinkers, the forefathers of Mars planned for this planet? I believe that it will become a Capitalist utopia. I world controlled by the psychology of Capitalism. This planet's purpose will be to make the rich richer. Another planet means more consumers. What's even better is with a clean slate, the population of Mars can be directed through Behavior modification to act out their role as to optimize profits. Or this population can be controlled as to be able to predict when recessions will occur or when the stock market will go up. Basically, you could put this population on a regular economic calendar, meaning the economic cycle could be controlled so that downturns and upturns occur at a predefined time. Just a thought.

Doesn't this look like a graphic made by a computer game designer? Not saying it's not authentic, just doesn't real to me.

I think it's really a function of the mosiac nature of the photos and the limited resolution and color depth. Are they operating at full resolution yet? I was under the impression that for several days they would be increasing the resolution. They may in fact be using some king of progressive JPEG format where the resolution improves over time.

I haven't read up on the transmission technology they are using or the frequency range.

The rover is in a huge crater whcih might explain the barren nature of the landscape. I wonder if they will try to travel closer to the rim to get more of the landscape.

I'm not sure on any of the specifics, they don't have too many images up at the NASA site yet. I'd be curious to see if they are in fact are going to increase the resolution how well the images will turn out being transmitted over such a long distance.

I believe that the images being put out for the public have been altered to fit expectations. I believe that the real images from the craft do not look like this. The real images are not this clear.

Why wouldn't they be clear? They're digital images from a camera that probably cost more than I'll make in a lifetime. Not pics taken with a throwaway cardboard camera.

I could be wrong, but I figured they did the same thing to these photos as they do to the images from the Hubble space telescope. I believe they add color and detail to the images from the Hubble.

They claim to have two cameras on board. A "fast" B&W one and a slower color camera. That's why the color image, so they say, took longer to see. Your doubts remind me of the old movie where the entire Apollo program took place in a secret back lot studio in Hollywood.

and they had problems with a servo on the antenna that they had to get up to transmit the high res images... They had to fix that problem before they could send the images... that's why it took longer. And yes, this photo above has been retouched for color correction... The original was still that clear, but the color was off... (like I'd know anyways, I 've never been there, it could be green for all I kow)

I understand that the colors the unit is capable of seeing were calibrated and stored back on earth so that when the images that were transmitted, once on Mars, could be color corrected back to the original colors. Sounds like they really though this one out.
