The doctor is right. Does it mean she'll get sick. Not necessarily. Reptiles like turtles and lizards carry small levels of salmonella. Usually only potent enough to make smaller children sick. To be honest lots of kids have them and never have a problem, but some kids immune system's aren't developed enough to combat them till they're older

Take a chance Kelly if she wants them. Just make sure you get her used to washing her hands after she handles it.

I bought one for my son a few years ago. It was the size of a half-dollar. The darn thing is about six inches long now. We call him "Fred". Even though I think it should be "Frederika". This thing is a blast. It even gets excited when someone walks into the room and starts pacing back and forth. It eats out of my hand, although it's getting kind of big now and I think his/her jaws are pretty powerful. Never had a problem.

That's right, as long as she washes her hands with soap after playing with the turtles, they will be fine. I had 2 turtles and it was no big deal.

I had all various sizes of turtles as a kid. I got some really cool small ones during a family vacation in Florida, back before it was widely known that some smaller reptiles can carry salmonella. I think the guideline is 4 inches and smaller shell size are no longer legal to sell.
I don't know, I had them and never had any problems. Just because they can carry it, doesn't mean they all do. Also, like Brian said, just make sure that she knows to wash her hands after handling them if they are that small. IMO, this should be standard practice regardless.
I enjoyed having turtles as I think they are cool creatures, I also went down to the local bait store and got a crayfish for a nickle and had him in the same tank. You know, trying to recreate a natural habitat. That crayfish got big! Kind of like a small lobster!
The one thing about turtles is, they can a little messy, both eating and shitting, so you will need to clean the water and aquarium more frequently than with just fish. But thats pets for you.

For "Legal" sale turtles have to have a 4 inch diameter shell. I can let you know of a place to go to get baby turtles fo "scientific purposes" and there is nothing that can be done about it. The only problem with baby turtles is you don't want to handle them too much due to stress, it just isn't good. Most have the intent to bite when you hold them no matter how long you have had it.
