(Deep Breath) Non-Sexual AuPair Experience?

Anyone... anyone have any practical experience with using an au pair for childcare?

Thus far my research has been limited to redtube clips. While very interesting, they don't seem to focus much on the childcare aspect - which, for whatever reason is the part that Mrs. Underdog seems to care about.

Specifically - considering the costs and pros/cons of the current daycare / part-time nanny / live-in au pair. Our house has a finished basement with a bedroom and a full bathroom / private entrance that we aren't using - so the room and board aspect isn't an issue at this time.

Seems that outside of the upfront costs, an au pair is a cost-effective way to go. There are also some benefits to the restricted time (6-24mo max) and cultural exposure. What I'm more curious about are the less obvious costs (getting a dedicated car for them for example).

Net: Anyone have any useful info on the subject?

I'm confident that I will get lots of suggestions as to how I might trash my marriage in short order - and learn how to say Pringles(TM) in new and interesting languages...but at this time I only want to know about the childcare part.

my neighbor friend had one from Australia. She was very open with her sexual escapades. I can ping them if you want info.

I'd be interested to get their impressions if you have occasion to ask. Would they do it again, what they liked / disliked, was the resulting divorce expensive... Stuff like that. Thanks Garfield!

A coworker had one from Spain (she is from there too) and a friend had one from Mexico (he is from there too). Both situations started off great and lasted as such for a few years. After that, it is hard to get the true story, both situations fell apart. Seems like the girls felt like they were entitled to more money/benefits/etc. Both parted ways back to the homelands, but not without some drama.

Interesting.

The only (actual) research I've done so far suggests that legally they can't stay in country on the visa for more then 24 months. That was part of the appeal - as I can probably tolerate someone that long if need be. Then no hard feelings when they have to go home. Also don't have to worry about Little Underdog getting too attached in the early years.

Also - it sounds like the au pair agencies do all the screening, and ongoing mediation. So if you get pissed off at each other, you can drag in your case worker and have them sort it out for you. ...all of these things appeal to my lazy, non-confrontational nature.

Hmm...when I read your autobiography, the chapter titled "Penicillin and Plan B - Fond Memories of my South American Vacations" did not mention much about swimming.

The cost through an agency will be much higher then of picking one and importing her. But that is the price you pay for the third party relationship. I took the same approach when hiring a second, third and so on cleaning lady. The first one was a direct hire and required that direct and confrontational approach. Worth the extra money. Anyways, good luck.

You read V1.......V2 I touch on it lightly and V3 goes into GREAT detail about the "dare" when I swam the Rio de La Plata from Buenos Aires to Montevideo Uruguay - Needless to say when he DID hand me the keys to his Cherry '74 Monte Carlo, I traded it for (2) Dos Equis and a ride into town......UP FRONT of the truck, not in the back bed with the other scabs

Yeah - I'm pretty sure Mrs. Underdog is only shopping for one with club foot and a weight problem. I reminded her that it didn't stop Governor Ahnold. She reminded me that I can be a real asshole sometimes.

---

Bug - I thought V2 was outstanding. Really good stuff, and the character development was stupendous. I laughed, I cried, I bought some cocaine to see if it was REALLY that good. I credit that book for changing my life around - and you should be proud of yourself.

I heard that V3 was a pretentious waste of time. Is it true that you outsourced the ghost writing to India? That might be why all the bloggers say some of the jokes don't translate.

Sadly, yes, the rumors are true - I did outsource but not to India - I found a guy on Somila Yelp out of Mogadishu who had 3 stars and if you know Mogadishu, NO ONE ever gets over 2 stars - Needless to say, yada yada yada, 5 balloons of pharmasutical grade opium later I find myself over there and engaged in the most heated game of Cribbage the Eastern World has even seen, or so my guide told me, not sure, he only spoke a very rare dialect of Aramaic and frankly, he was a waste of $12 - So, I end up losing and our bet was for a few "character twists" - Industry Secret, I never ran the Marathon 150 miles North of the Arctic Circle, that was all him - It did however make for some pretty cool T-Shirts which are selling like mad on Cafe Press..........that within the bet, I only get .002 per 100 ordered - FUCK ME I need glasses

I meant to ask you about those shirts. I was surprised to see something so self-effacing coming out of your camp. Good on you nevertheless. Also - to me Aramaic (especially when at least one person in the conversation is in the throes of opium and board games) sounds like Boomhauer on King of the Hill.

Sucks about getting swindled on the shirt deal. Sorry about that. Once I get done with my childcare search I'll get some of my "attorney" (read: Mercenaries) friends to go back there and help you renegotiate.

I'm seeing the situation developing into this.....although you could recoup the costs by selling your story for a lifetime chick flick

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

I personally would not choose in home daycare. There is a lot of be said for social and intellectual development at a young age. My son has been in a learning center (not just a daycare) since he was 3 months old. Yes, it has cost me somewhere close to $60k over the past 5 years, but he has thrived in that environment. The teachers are great, the curriculum has been great, kids of all cultures attend and he has a posse of about 5 friends that he has now been with since he was an infant.

If you ain't with us, then it's just bad news.

I love it!

I'm confident that I will get lots of suggestions as to how I might trash my marriage in short order - and learn how to say Pringles(TM) in new and interesting languages...but at this time I only want to know about the childcare part.

Ask Equalz, he has or had one, i mentioned this to my wife and she said no way as she thinks the pringles can would get lost in some 22yr old hot ukrainian au pairs can - it would!
