Motorcycle Sales Tax - IL

What is the sales tax on a 2013 motorcycle here in IL? Historically I've only paid about $25 at time of title/register but I believe that only applies to bikes over a certain age. It's been a while since my last purchase.

Looking for a quick answer so I'm sorry if it's posted and I didn't find it.

Thanks!

If it was a private sale you will have to pay $25 to the state at the Dept. of Revenue office inside the Sec. of State office when you go and transfer the title. If you bought from a licensed dealer he should be handling all of that for you.
BUT!!!....................It gets sticky from here. It's been a long while since I bought a bike so I am not sure if there is a City tax (nothing to worry about if you don't live in Chicago) however... there is a Cook County private sale transaction tax that was originally quite steep. I know they lowered it to a flat fee for bikes after a big outcry and I think it's a flat $90 but, check to make sure. They get notified by the state and then they bill you.

A word to the wise...if they bill you...pay them...it's worth it to avoid the hassles that will visit you if you ignore them!

"Dirt is for racing on...Asphalt is for getting there" OR "Flat trackers go in deeper and come out harder... OR (With apologies to General MaCarthur) "Old motorcycle racers never die, they just slip off the groove and fade into the dust!

If you want to anger a conservative, tell him a lie. To anger a liberal all one must do is tell the truth!
