POP Up ADS _ IM GOING NUTS !

The past week or so Im getting about 10 pop up ads with every link or website that I click on. I have no idea whats going on or how it happened. Its slowed my computer down to a snails pace too.

Whats the best solution? Going and buying a ad blocker or? Interesting that my brother has been seeing the same thing for about a week.

Suggestions?

Mike

Download and run SpyBot. You can get it from www.download.com. After you download and run it, it will ask to run again at startup. Choose Yes. That should take care of your problems.

Here is a direct link to the Spybot download.

After install, open the app. Choose "Search & Destroy". On the bottom of the main window, click the "check for problems" button. Depending on the speed of your computer and the number of files you have, it could take up to 15 minutes to finish.

Try adaware. http://www.lavasoft.de/default.shtml.en

I use it in conjunction with spy bot and a few others about everyweek. Running spyware scanners is now becoming just another part of using a computer.

Spybot is the opnly way to go. Also Ask Ken for the directions I gave him to shut down the popups he was getting, I dont remeber where I posted that for him. Ken if you read this copy and paste it here.

Spybot Search & Destroy is what you want. I know a couple of others gave you links, but this one is right off their site...

http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download

I have been religiously using Spybot S&D for about the last year. When I was in Atlanta last week, each computer in that branch was scanned with Spybot and I discovered that a few people were doing a little more than work...

Mike,

spybot and adware both took care of some of the problems I've had with the pop-up's. Ad-ware especially took care of the slowness. Another good idea is to download the google toolbar at www.google.com. It will block alot of the the pop-ups.

I use spybot AND AdAware in conjunction.

Now if i can only get an update to remove the dreaded LOP.
Spybot says its coming soon. If you run across the LOP and the computer hangs on it you can "check off" LOP so spybot ignores it.

Zone Alarm Pro

Zone Alarm Pro is what I use and it is worth the money. Not one single Pop up makes it through. It is a great Firewall as well.

Is zone alarm intended for home use? Its obviously not cheap . spybot or adware hasnt worked. Anything else I should consider? Is this possibly a virus?

It could be virus....run a virus check.

You can get a free version of zone alarm for home. Did you download the google toolbar?

It's got a built in pop up blocker. It also gives you a googel search neatly in the top left of your screen.

Funny you should mention it. I'm getting a lot lately too. I've got Spybot and AdAware running and they are making it through. There must be a new Trojan making the rounds.

Messanger popups are going around.

Do this:

Right-click My Computer and choose Manage.
Go to Service and Applications and choose Services.
Double-click the Messenger entry.
Choose Disable as the Startup type.
Click Stop and Apply."

If that the kind they are this should do the trick. A regular pop up blocker wont catch then but doing that will.

Zone Alarm is for home use. I run norton and ZA Pro. A firewall is highly recommended esp if you have broadband or DSL as it keeps people out of your computer. I think I paid like 50 bucks for 2 years.

Mike, is this your computer at home or work?

regardless if you haven't run a defrag 2 or three may be in order. As for the popups, I'm not sure your running the software right or that stuff would be gone.
