Hdtv?

Well I messed up and over estimated how much I needed to send to my friends at the IRS. So I have an unexpected $12g check burning a whole in my pocket. And no, I'm not ready to trade in the 929 for the 1000 just yet.

Anyway, I've got a middle aged 52 or 55", I forget which, Pioneer projection TV sitting in the family room. It's still fine, but it's not HDTV. So I'm thinking about taking a portion of the check and buying a new TV. I really don't want to go off the deep end and blow $4 to 5 k on a boob tube. I only watch TV in that room for 30-60 minutes a day max. So my question is, do I wait a while longer as they keep getting cheaper? And is there anything worth buying for around $2g? The only thing I've been told is if I go with a new projection TV to look at DLP.

Anybody up on what is available?

Thanks

For 45 minutes or so a day to watch the news, occasionally adult swim and a couple rental movies a year? That's not happening. You are talking about blowing around 14K if I guess right. Hell, get the 82" for 16k. My life doesn't revolve around the TV. I spend too much time in front of the computer Anyway, that's too close to a new 1000. Oops, more than a new 1000.

BTW, I know me. If I start at 2k I'll be able to put on the brakes at 3k. I think there is some decent stuff out there in that range.

You should be able to get a good LCD with HD tv for 2-3k.

I've got a strong in at Abt.
My partner just got a Samsung HLN467W 46in HDTV DLP from them. It was the largest that would fit into his wall unit. He liked the picture better than a Plasma. The DLP technology sounds pretty strong for a projection tv. He liked the Sony a lot too, but it wouldn't fit.

the dlp units are awesome too, and have a much smaller bezel which is a great selling point. they are just a bit more than the sony lcd units though, and a small portion of the population sees rainbow effect when watching DLP projection. Something I personally wouldnt want to deal with.

That's just due to years of drug abuse.

Anyway, I know where I'm going tonight.

Thanks for the advise everyone. I'll keep you posted.

Now, assuming I buy a new toy, what do I do with my old 55" set? There is no room for it anywhere else upstairs (I already have a 35 sitting around unused in one of the bedrooms.) and the basement isn't finished. I was thinking about doing that next year. Even if it was, it will be a bitch getting down the stairs and past the turn.

seriously some people do see rainbows. i guess the key is to NOT look for it. Once you see them you always will. For tons and tons and tons of good info go to avsforum.com. That place rocks and its huge. It took me weeks and weeks to sift through it all when I was mulling a TV purchase.

Jesis....you still haven't pulled the trigger yet?

Bruce...I love my 50" DLP (HLN5065), no rainbows even when I look for them. Got mine from ABT about 6 months ago. The prices still have not dropped much from when I began looking at these sets over a year ago.

MIGHT be interested depending on a price and age of the TV??? Just let me know as Winter time I was gonna look at a possible bigscreen.

If I do decide to sell it I'll make sure to post it here and shoot you a pm.

My wife wanted to come with so I didn't have time to go to Abt. I just went by Best Buy. I really like the Sony KF-60WE610 LCD HDTV Grand Wega. Chris, you were right about the Grand Wega's. Good call. 60" is the most I can fit on the wall it will live. They have it on sale at $3,240. It also needs a stand (so does the Samsung) and that adds about $250 if I go with Sony's. For that type of $ I may build a custom unit. They also give out a mess of coupons that add up to $160 off future purchases and have free delivery and 2 years same as cash if you are interested in getting a BB card. Of course, it's a little more than I want to spend, but wow what a picture. I could save almost $600 and go with the 50", but it's like buying a liter bike vs. a 600. I do have to admit, I'm rather torn between the 2. Frankly I like it better than the Plasmas (no burn in and a lot less $) and the Samsung (It just seems to have a brighter picture.) although the technology of the Samsung is very cool.

Anyway, I think I'll hit Abt tommorow and see what they can do for me.

Oh, I decided to change to Direct TV with TiVo too. It looks like it's the way to go with HDTV.

Well I put the $ down on the 60" Sony. It is being delivered on Tuesday. I can't believe I just spent that much on a TV.

I know, I'm still stunned that I spent so much on a TV. I bought my 52" from one of my girls for $500 when it only had a year on it. It was her sister's and she passed away from CA. I think that was the most I ever spent on a TV. Oh, my wife already gave the 52" away to the outlaws. Sorry.

the sony stand cost a mint and isnt so great for actually holding things. Ikea makes a nice wood veneer unit that is just the right height(read: low) and only $99, its called the Oppi or Oppli(you know those goofy swede names there). Grand Wega owners love it as an atractive low buck stand.

oh and congrats on your purchase I'm officially jealous!

Cheyenne: Best Buy had 2 years same as cash plus 10% off last weekend if you got a BB card on any high end TV. I'm not wild about giving the TV to my outlaws, but I'm sure I can leverage it into a mother's and father's day gift.

Stranger, the 1000 is coming when it's coming. After riding our bikes side by side, I'm waiting at least a year to let Big Red "tweak" it. No reason to rush since the beasty is still in the stupid fast mode.

Thanks Chris. I took a pass on the $599 (Yikes) Sony stand too. I was going to run by Ikea. Great minds think alike. I was also thinking of building a wall unit. I'm just not sure I want to go that far, but can use the additional storage for DVDs and junk. I've done it before and am pretty good with a router. Hell, if I had half a brain I'd bribe Rick to let me in his shop.

OK I'm back.

Uh Oh, I just got the call from my wife. They are coming by to drop it off today instead of Tuesday. I guess I'm not working late tonight. Too bad I won't have the HDTV cable box upgraded till tomorrow. Right now Comcast is only charging $10 to add the box and wire up the old box to the workout room. I'll look into Direct TV in the next month or so.

Now I need a progressive DVD player. I'd like to get a combo DVD/VCR so my little girl can still watch some of her old tapes without having to have an extra box. Any recommendations?

Then a new home theater speaker system as my old studio monitor speakers with the 12" woofers will no longer fit on the floor next to the TV.

Might as well get a new 7.1 receiver while I'm at it.

Damn, this set just keeps getting more expensive.
