Mountain Bike Trails

Whoo Hoo! I just bought a mountain bike last night now I'm looking for some trails.

I know in the last thread people mentioned some trails but I have no idea where they and more importantly where the entrances are.

Please post up.

Also if you could mention what type of trail they are that would be great too (single track, wide race, flat, steep hill climbs and decents, etc...)

Thanks in advance.

I don't know of any trails, but i do know you could ride through the forest preserve Irving Park / cumberland. But i never done it so no clue.

What kind of bike did you get?? I am interested in getting one this summer , but have no freakin clue on which one.. and which brand etc. Do you have any good websites that you used for research?

Voytek: I bought a 2002 Specialized Stumpjumper. Lots of information is available at www.mtbreview.com, almost too much information.

Slowass: I use to ride years ago on my 92 GT rigid. I bought a bike to change my workouts up and to just get back into it. I've been running for a couple months now a couple days a week ranging from 3-8 miles per time. Obviously riding uses the muscles differently so my first couple times will mostly be for reaquainting my body with the bike and position. I love to have you school me on a trail

Well, it sounds like you're in good shape, so yeah, LET'S RIDE!

I think Kettle Morraine is an excellent choice. It's a fast trail and it's not too technical...I need to brush up on my technical skills, so for that, we'll hit Palos. For the first ride, let's do Kettle.

I'm interested...but my schedule is pretty full. I'm doing a sprint triathlon in Sept. that involves a 9 mi. mountain bike ride and 5 K run. Anyone interested...it's in Bloomington.

If you guys do go to Kettle Morraine and I can make it, I have an extra rail on my rack.

LOL...I'm out. Mom's day on Sunday and I'm heading down to B/N to ride the trail I'm riding in Sept. I might be able to postpone my arrival time. I'm 50% there

Des Plaines River trail? Is that near Wilmington? If so, how do you get there. I'm sort of familiar w/ the area and that is only 30 min. from me.

check out some dupage county lakes. And they will have bike trials. But make sure they allow bikes.

Cook county has a lot of forest preserves and very neat single dirt trails. Brookfield and westchester and some of the towns surrounding them have an ashpalt bike trials.

For Desplains River Trail, I start at Proviso West HS on Madison ave in Forest Park. I continue north until I get tired, then I go back. I know it goes all the way to Wisconsin but I never tried, usually only to about the Rosemont area.

As stated before MTBR.com is the place to go to find trails. Also, trailmonkey.com and Chicagofreride.com has a couple trails. I have a couple local "secret" trails I hit up when I can.

Palos is good, Busse woods in schaumburg is good for afterword ride, beware of the gay section in the summer. I was leading ride thru there a couple years ago, saw some freaky stuff.

I bought a book with all the local riding areas and spent a summer riding some of them

Seems like it is going to be cold and rainy tomorrow, but I'm still interested in riding if a group gets together. I suggest Palos Hills but I've never been to Kettle Mor. Anybody in?

Brian and I do the Prairie Trail it runs past our house - it's all flat thorugh the woods... I don't ride that much anymore. I used to be able to ride from Elmhurst to South Elgin and back 4 times a week and still be able to go out clubbin until 5AM... getting old sucks

There are some nice trails my way. There is the Salt Creek trail (@ 13 miles round trip). The Prairie Path is cool and the Desplains Path that starts in Forest Park are great. The Desplians path is a one that you need to be careful on if you don't know it when you start out.

If you want to ride, i'm in.

  • A week at Deals Gap - $200.
  • Roasting a set of tires at the Gap - $350.
  • Low siding your CBR1100XX - $9,500.

prairie path? I thought this was about mountain biking. Thats a nice scenic trail but you can just bomb down the prairie path on a road bike, just be sure to clean off all the lime stone shit afterwards, seems to dry out your chain.

If you guys have ride dates, I would be more than willing to hook up for some Mountain Riding. In the Naperville area, the Knoch Nolls (?) forest preserve has some decent trails with varying technical ranges (low to high).

Ok, who's up for a ride and when? I did 3.3 miles today while pulling my two kind in a tag along. ( I will post pics later) It is suppose to be in the 80's this week. Maybe we can ride Friday evening or Saturday morning.

Maybe we can do part of the Desplains path starting around Madison ave in River Forest. Or we can do the Salt Creek path around Brookfield Zoo.

I have not broken in my saddle for this year let alone my leggs, but a friedly ride would be cool.

As of right now these are the days my schedule will allow for a group gathering.

  • A week at Deals Gap - $200.
  • Roasting a set of tires at the Gap - $350.
  • Low siding your CBR1100XX - $9,500.
