Location Advice (Moving to Chicago)

Well, I'm getting closer to the actual decision time and I was wondering about some areas in Chicago and thought I would hit the locals for some feedback.

Criteria:
- Older home (early 1900's or older!)
- No bible thumping (I don't blend well with the Christian conservative community, I do better with the liberal art crowd)
- Lower Crime
- Good schools (I have a 21 month old, so school will matter soon)
- Near the Metra (will probably end up working down-town initially)
- Reasonable access to a highway (Byron raceway, family in Chicago north, Milwaukee, etc.)
- Stable property tax rate (or at least not outrageous)
- Access to good shopping (the big shops like grocery, Lowes, etc.)

There..

Now, the list I have so far that looks like it will work and be affordable in the current housing market is:

- Batavia
- Elgin (not south)
- Cary
- Crystal Lake
- Barrington
- Palatine
- Lockport
- Berwyn
- Geneva (favorite so far)

Anyone have feedback on any/all of the areas? Good, bad, anything to help sift the list down some.

Thanks
- Dean

I work in most of these towns. I persoanlly stay away from Berwyn, parts of Elgin, and parts of Lockport. The others are ok. Geneva is a very nice town. The downtown area is wonderful with lots of small shops to walk around in during the warm days. Lombard has old homes too, but better hurry, they like to get rid of them.

I vote for Lockport!

I live in Crest Hill and we are part of the Lockport school district and they definitely have a good school system. Definitely highway accessible and shopping is good ie. (home depot, menards) Property taxes are good. Homes you can actually build your own for a decent buck if you want but there are reasonable homes that are already established.

Good luck on your search!

Lockport & Geneva, cool. Definite thumbs up there.

What about Cary & Crystal Lake area? Is it depressed? Crappy schools? Any ideas?

What is up with Elgin?? They have beautiful homes and look good on paper, is there high crime or something?

Thanks a lot for your help!!

The new part of Elgin is nice, the old part, the techs are told to keep doors lockd and anything worth money, kept out of sight.

Are you visiting soon?

Geneva is a great choice, and is fits your needs fully (train, great schools, old homes etc). The town has an interesting history, as well as a beautiful downtown area. St. Charles and Geneva are parallel of each other (2 minutes apart) and both have a great summer fest, and river activites.

What is your time frame?

If I were you, I'd also look into Naperville and Hinsdale.
They both have EVERYTHING that would fit your criterias and they aren't in the middle of bufu!

They are if you consider Rockford a metropolitan area.

Dude,

Depending on your pricerange, you would probably like Oak Park. It's a very liberal community though the housing is pricey. I live in Skokie and would recommend it but the houses are mainly from the 40s and 50s. Naperville probably has the best schools in the greater metropolitan area but it's a hike from Chicago, 30-40 miles, and (except Gautam) is pretty lily white.
