depend what county you're in and what you're buy. generally around 8%.

This is a cash and carry world - pay as you go
sometimes you only have to pay a little, mostly it's alot, once in a while it's all you have.

Generally 8.75% in cook county within the city of Chicago for most merchandise sales tax.

Outside the city of Chicago within cook county it varies from between 7.75% to 8.50%.

When you buy a vehicle of any kind, your sale tax is based on what town you live in. ie. city of Chicago vs. outside the city of Chicago.

6.5% for Lake & McHenry, 7.25 for Kane, and Cook County varies depending on which city your'e in (I'm not sure, but I think Schaumburg is pushing 10%)

Look, I can appreciate this. I was young too, I felt just like you. Hated authority, hated all my bosses, thought they were full of shit. Look, it's like they say, if you're not a rebel by the age of 20, you got no heart, but if you haven't turned establishment by 30, you've got no brains. Because there are no story-book romances, no fairy-tale endings. So before you run out and change the world, ask yourself, "What do you really want?"

My shop is located in Stone Park. Sales tax here is 9.25%. Tax does vary by community. Last location I was in was Melrose Park. Stone Park and Melrose border each other. When I moved from Melrose tax was 7.75%.

I can't tell you the percentages. There is a base percentage that goes to the state. On top of that is a smaller percentage that goes to the local community where the retailer is located. The amount of this percentage varies by community. This is why the percentage varies somewhat depending on where you make your purchase within the state.

Don't forget the McCormick place tax in the city. Restaurants and luxury items are taxed at 9.75% within certain areas of the city(closer to downtown).

I think you'll have to pay the difference in sales tax between MI & IL when you register your car though.

It's 6.5% for cars, if I'm correct. If you live in Cook county then you'll have to pay a county tax of 0.75% on top of the 6.5%.

Exactly. When purchasing a motor vehicle, you'll pay tax based on where you register it.
