A Happy Ending.

As some of you know, we share our home with 5 cats, a Dobie and an extended family of raccoons who have renovated our garage attic.

Last night when I came home from work, John asked if I wanted to see a raccoon baby. Apparently, one of the babies had fallen out of the attic and was laying on the ground alongside the garage. He was so small that he could fit in the palm of my hand... his movements were weak and every so often you would hear him crying out for his mother. Those little noises went right through my heart. We figured it couldn't have been there for very long and after a LOT of deliberation decided to wait and see if the mother would show up for her little one. Resisting the urge to just scoop that little guy up right then and bring him in the house was probably the hardest thing I've ever done. I couldn't bear to think of him lying there. Later that evening, John came in the house and told me that it had died, and that he would find a small box for it and bury it in the yard in the morning. I cried myself to sleep and woke up absolutely miserable.

John took the dog out in the morning and returned with news: the little guy was STILL ALIVE! Somehow it had survived the night - he touched it and it MOVED! Well, at that point it was clear that Mom wasn't coming back... and no way was I going to wait another minute! I grabbed a shoebox and some soft rags and ran to the grocery store, figuring I'd find some condensed milk or something to at least give it some nourishment. Imagine my surprise when I found baby formula made just for little critters - and a tiny baby bottle too! I flew home, afraid that I would be too late (he would barely move at all by now).

I scooped him up in my bare hand - he was practically weightless and I could see that his eyes hadn't even opened yet. I marveled at his spirit and a quick inspection showed no obvious signs of injury. I stroked his little furry body and dribbled a few drops of formula on his muzzle. After an agonizing moment, his tiny little tongue darted out and I could see him swallow. YESS!

What he needed now was warmth, and a lot of it! I placed him in the shoebox, got in the car and turned the heat on full blast. We drove to my vet, who unfortunately was not licensed to rehab wildlife. Had to drive out to Grayslake with my little buddy (who by now was starting to show signs of improvement... making little chattering noises while sightlessly seeking the warmth of my hand and trying to climb out of the box. I drove with one hand and alternated between holding the bottle and stroking him with the other.

The veterinary office, Best Friends Animal Hospital of Grayslake, had us in an exam room in a matter of minutes. Carol, the tech, took a quick look at him, amazed at the lack of heat in his little fuzzy body and got him quickly situated with a nice, soft warm place. I can't tell you how grateful I was that they were there and able to help. She said we did the right thing by waiting to see if it's mother would show up before handling him.

I called Carol a little while ago and "Scrapper" is holding his own. His body temperature is back to normal and he's taking formula from a bottle. They will nurture him and when he's old enough, he'll be released into the wild.

That is cute. I bet it was good to wait to pick up the little thing, wouldn't the sent of a human on the baby make the mom not want the baby? I know some animals are like that.

Raccoons really dont give a damn about human scent. They usually are aorund things humans touch anyways.

I'm not crazy, my mother had me tested.

Raccoons are extremely intelligent and can make darn good pets for someone who has a lot of time and patience. They can be litterbox trained! Unfortunately, keeping him was not an option - we don't have room for any more animals (especially something as active and naturally curious as a baby 'coon), and my schedule takes too much time away from the "kids" we already have. It wouldn't be fair to the little guy.

I was very relieved to find out that "wildlife rehab" services were so close and convenient - there was no charge to bring him in, although I did make a sizeable donation to the fund that supports this work.

Good job!
I knew a guy in highschool who had 2 raccoons that he adopted. He found them when they were babies and assumed that thier mom was hit by a car. They did make pretty good pets and they seemed ready to go as they got older and so they did. Do they have a little mask when thier that small?
