oakbrook police

this happened sunday but i've been busy til now.

I don't have my license, only a permit, but i've been riding and took the msf course in chicago but my test day got rained out friday so im waiting on that. anyways here we go

rode the bike to work(eddie bauer oakbrook mall) parked it legally in a spot with another bike. came out to go to lunch started to put a leg over the bike and an oakbrook cop rolls up next to me and waves me over to his car.

He asks if im joshua, then he says, you get on the bike, i'll arrest you. He asks me if i have a license for it, i answer honestly, that no i do not. He then asks me why im riding it etc etc. He asks me if i work at the mall, and then says because i work at the mall he will let me go home, and he doesn't fuck with people who work at his mall(his words) but warned me anyother cop would have arrested me and towed my bike. He got the no license thing by running my plates and apparently you can see what class license i had on his computer

so are cops that bored now that they randomely run our plates? im just happy he let me go home, now the bike is parked til im legal

josh

Yes, they do it all time. They also associate you with the group you are seen riding with. If this group has a "history", you are suddenly a "Known Associate". These lists are routinely distributed throughout neighboring police stations. Have a nice day.

wow.. that blows.. thats why i never tell people my name.

i had a suspended licence for a while.. i was doing burnouts in front of a buddies house.. parked the car in the street.. cops rolled up.. and asked.. "are you alex" i'm like nope.. never heard of him.. then they ask for ID, "i don't have any" and there is nothing they can do, cause well i have done nothing i'm just sitting on my buddies porch

I'm glad you got home okay and didn't get arrested or towed. Good thinking to keep off the streets until you get your M class or are riding with licensed riders.

My gf has a co-worker who's 20 and has a permit but rides around all the time. He's a newbie, with about 6 weeks in the saddle. I tell him not to ride unless he's with legal friends but he thinks he knows better.

Never a bad time to climb... unless the weather is really horrible, and then you climb inside!

if you had ridden off alone it's illegal. If you had someone with you, or the other guy in the spot had left at the same time as you you'd be fine since you have a permit. Get your license or roll with buddies!!

"my mall", i love that bullshit. My buddy got arrested for taking a piss in one of the parking garages in naperville. The cop said to me with his flashlight in my face, "which one of you decided to make my parking lot his personal toilet". I didnt realize it was his lot, haha! pretty funny though.

Oakbrook cops are generally good people. I have not had a bad experience with them, I also work in the town. I have been let off a couple of times for speeding when I left work. We cater a Thanksgiving dinner for the FD and PD that are working that day!

It sounds weird to me that he referred to you by name. I realize that the bike is probably registered to you, but still. Did he look like he had run the plates already? it could be someone is trying to get you in trouble or something. Always paranoind when cops address me by name...

What exactly are the laws for permitted drivers in this state?

Helmets?
Passangers?
Night riding?
Highways?

No helmet restriction... passengers not allowed (well, I'm 90% sure on that one)... night riding I dunno... highways are fine.

That's not true at all. You just look less suspicious when you're "older" and on a Harley. Even if you're wearing all black with patches, fringe and concho's all over and a beanie that says 81.

my personal rule of thumb is never to say anything to any public servant until a judge or your own lawyer orders you to. I don't do too much wrong, but it's amazing how much trouble you can get into for stuff you DIDN'T do, just by opening your mouth.

someone asks for something, politely say no until you see some kind of warrant. I know it sounds harsh like you're living your life on the run or something, but it's generally a good rule to remember, and to remind you that you have rights.

No helmet required.

No passenger.

No night riding.

Highways are fine.

A buddy with an M class has to be near you (and I'm pretty sure they must be licenced for at least 1 year) and I think the curfew is 8 or 9 p.m...can't remember for sure.

if i was you i would do right by the law, and ride legally, the cop cut you a break, and yes in essence it is his mall "in a referance" thats his area to protect/serve/keep clean" being a cop is more then just a job.

yea that would sucki suppose , if this goddam class would stop giving me the runaround on when i can take my test this would be so much easier, $400 bucks to get blown off, and told to call back later in the week, this is getting old, and it's getting nicer out every day.

You don't HAVE to go take the class... You CAN just go to the DMV and attempt the test. It's not THAT hard. Good luck.

Not a flame or a criticism, just an observation I think you need to have more respect for officers. You were doing something wrong, you were breaking the law by riding the bike. The cop is thinking to himself, "If little punks like this would just obey the law, I wouldn't have to respond to another call of a dead teenager." He is trying to protect you from yourself. You choose to break the law, you should expect things like this to happen. Also, Oakbrook Mall is a safe, hassle free environment. I like it that way as do most people. It is safe because of the hard work of officers like that. You can feel safe parking that bike of yours in the parking without having to worry about it getting stolen because of the hardwork of officers like that. You know some of you guys rag on cops all the time. I'd love to see you in a world without the level of law enforcement we have here. You would be the first ones crying like a baby

Another reason for calling you by name also could be a tactic to see if the bike may be stolen. He could've been doing you a favor if the circumstances were different.

One question crossed my mind here:

What gave the officer the legal right to run your plates in the first place?

A good friend of mine's fiancee is a detective for the Carpentersville PD - and she tells me that an officer can get in trouble for running someone's plates without a legitimate reason.

Each time your plate is "run" - a tally is kept in the system: how many times it's been run, and by whom. If an officer legitimately catches you horsing around, runs your plates, and sees that it's been run 30x before in the last month... it may sway his decision to let you go. "Hmm, looks like this guy probably causes all sorts of trouble..."

they dont need a right when your on private property(except for the one who owns the property), i got a ticket for no city sticker at woodfield mall, and i dont even live in that town. (can you say revenue generator). I was pissed, they got a letter with the $25 bucks i sent in. yeah i could have fought it since my village doesnt require a village sticker, but that would have cost me alot more then the 25 to take a day off for that shit. its all about money, i havent been back to woodfield since (some 6years ago) fuck em!!

So, you need a Woodfield sticker to park at Woodfield Mall? That's f*cked up!
