Damn kids in the street

Do you guys notice how now adays, it seems like kids playing in the street don't seem to get outta the way when you're driving in your car anymore?

When I was a kid, either it was fear of getting run over, or just plain damn respect to move outta the way...and shit...we understood that we weren't technically supposed to be playing in the street anyway. The street belonged to the cars/m-cycles/motorized vehicles/adults, and we were invading their space anyway by playing in the street.

I tell ya...some of these punk ass kids will even stare you down in the eyes like "I ain't movin..." My problem is, I have about as much maternal instinct as a paranah with PMS, so I'd think nothing of putting tire marks right on the kids' punk ass face...At least get outta the car and beat the bastard with his mothertrucking hockey stick...and spit in his face and say "NOW WHO'S NOT MOVIN???!!! OH YEAH! YOU!"

OK, now I know I'm old because I'm giving "these damn kids today" speeches.

The ABS in my car hasn't worked in years, and I've discovered that nothing says "Excuse me, im driving here." like the sound of screeching tires. This doesn't even have to be dangerously close. Just the sound seems to strike terror into pedestrians in the street and send children diving to the curb, even if you like half a block away from them.

It's that whole lack of respect for adults that's got kids yelling at their parents and doing whatever the hell they want...Being loud and annoying in public...It's gotten pretty severe when they don't even have the regard for a moving vehicle that could kill them...that's how little they revere adults..."Eh...you'll just move around me." Think about it.

Kids are just that - kids. It's not their fault the parents don't know how to discipline them. If I saw my kid do that, believe me he would never do it again. You're not born with respect for others. You have to be raised.

Oh I know...I'm placing the real blame on the parents here...We've all seen 'em in public...yelling at their parents and whining and the adults do nothing about it...I'd get that murderous look like "Wait 'til we get home" and that shut me up right away...

Last week I was sitting on my balcony consuming ice cold beverages when I see these two kids, maybe 13-14 years old, riding their bicycles in the street. I live on a somewhat busy street. Well I watch them travel about a block and they keep crossing back and forth. They get to where I am and I hear one say, as he almost gets wasted by a pick up, "Ha, I got him-he had to lock the brakes up!"

I couln't believe it, the little bastards were TRYING to get cars to slam on their brakes! I jumped on my mountain bike and followed them home. Knock on the door and told the kids father what the little bastards were doing, and the guy got pissed at ME for following the kids home! Says to me "Mind your own fucking business"

Prolly the same little asshats that keep breaking beer bottles in my driveway.

WOW!!! See, this is what I'm talking about...See, there's something far worse going on here...I think the very thing that's supposed to make America great -- you know, the whole "melting pot" of ideas and values and diversity has backfired upon itself. See, back a couple generations ago, and still today in countries where there is more of a shared value system, neighbors looked out for each other's kids and it was not uncommon to discipline other people's kids because it was understood that we had a shared value system. I know that this is still how it occurs in village-oriented places. You could knock on somebody's door and tell them that their kids were jumping into traffic and the parents would actually appreciate your caring enough to inform them. Now, it's all "I'll raise my kids the way I want to, and you can raise yours the way you want!" Even in obvious cases such as this, where kids were running out in front of cars!

In the midst of our diversity and valuing ALL value systems, we've seemed to erode to NO value systems.

That's it! this thread has gotten me so worked up, I'm running over the next kid I see. even if they're playing in the grass.

the little bastards usually move for me though. Like mopar said, when you got a big ass truck, and mine is loud as hell too, they move.

I've got a cousin that's the same way. His parents first tried raising him saying that they'd never hit him... That worked till he was about 3, and he was one of the worst terrors I've ever seen. That's when they finally decided... Uhh maybe a spanking is the way to go. He straighted up for a while, but now is 14 and they're having the same disipline & respect problems. Yet now the kid knows that he could try and hit back, or call social services...

I have a feeling that I want to hang out with this kid for a day (something I have never done), catch him in the act of some sort of disrespect and ...throw him abound a bit, and let him know why respect of that situation is deserved, or someone like me will knock the $hit out of him...

Ride Safe.

Respect is just a fancy way to spell fear, My kids know there's a ass beating on the other side of doing something stupid...

As for the kids in the street, Blow the horn to get their attention, cover your eyes, hold the wheel with your knee and floor it...

Style is the excuse used by those who have neither the nerve or the intelligence to live their own lives.

Oh yeah, nothing makes them move like a downshift and snap back on the throttle. I don't see those kind too often around here but I know what you're talking about. My city unfortantly is going to shit, but still not many of those center street walkers around. I would have to assume that the type you talk about is the spoiled suburban type that don't know discipline. It's fun too when they wave thier hands in the air and yell, as if you're going to stop, and go back to fight some punk you never seen before in you're life because he/she is walking in the middle of the road.
